Hi folks,

was wondering if there are any photos of the wiring that is required for a headlight upgrade. I have already printed the explanation by 'Convertible Mini' but I am more a visual person. ie see it and do it. if someone can point me to a thread that has photos, I'll appreciate it. :D

I fitted Wipac Quadoptic lamps (H4s) from Minispares. All I did for a relay was cut the high beam and low beam wires (blue/white and blue/red) at the RH end of the firewall, then connect them to a (double) New Era headlamp relay (which also has 2x 30A fuses in it). I then ran a 4mm² red power supply wire from it to the battery terminal on the solenoid, and a 4mm² black earth wire to the body.
I kept the original wiring from the relay to to the lamps as the bulbs are only 55/45W. Lights are bright as day now. :P

Relay is visible at end of the firewall.

I did the same as Dr but I replaced all the thin wires Blue White trace & Red trace with fatter wires from a Later model. Also convert to H4 it you haven't already

My headlight switch keep burning if I put relay would that help me too.

Yes, with relays fitted the headlight switch only carries a tiny current to switch the relays on.
You can either use a double headlamp relay like mine, or 2 single ones (1 for high, & 1 for low beam).

Ok folks, just to let you all know the Headlight Upgrade is completed. 'The Brick' now has wipac quadoptics lights installed..., & in case you are all wondering, They work very well! :D I also replaced the voltage stabliser behind the instument console. The fuel gauge & temp work now as well.

The Tacho was not connected up, so I hooked it up as well.However there is a problem with the Tacho reading 8000 rpm as soon as ignition key is turned to Aux or Ign positions. :o

The Tacho is wired in the following way...... Red wire with female spade terminal to male spade terminal, printed circuit circle hole screwed down, white wire with black trace that has a female bullet terminal is connected to male bullet terminal.

So the big question is What the Hell is going on? Any ideas? :oops:

Hi Peter,
Given the hodgepodge nature of wiring colours and connectors used to join them, are you able to describe where the wires begin and end? i.e. what are the wires actually connected to?

Generally, tachos are wired up like this:

NB: Pay no attention to the wiring colours in the diagram - depending on your tacho they could be anything, but the wiring principle is almost universal.

Probably. I just googled for wiring diagrams - the explanation I had written out was too complicated for what is a really simple setup.

On my old Clubman I had the 'S' instrument panel with the tacho, but it didn't work and I didn't bother hooking it up because the printed circuit ribbon made it more trouble than it was worth... or so I thought at the time.

Obviously, an 'S' dash will be setup correctly for a 4 cylinder engine. Most aftermarket tachos have a sliding switch for 4/6/8 cylinders to get an accurate reading on any engine.

Hey Thomas,

The Red wire starts at the printed circuit on the console itself. I believe its power. The White wire with black trace that has the female bullet terminal goes all the way back to the ignition coil. The printed circuit has a hole that lined up with the securing screw. And thats all there is.

Take the wire off the coil and see if it is still pulling 8000 revs. :wink:
