Post subject:  Gearbox rebuild

Hi all,

Well the 1098 for my Moke is well underway and almost near completion, so it's time to get cracking on the gearbox side of things.
It's a rod change gearbox, and is very standard at the moment.
I think the stock diff in it is 4.1:1... it used to rev its little head off at 100km/hr!
I think I'll be changing this out for a 3.4:1, as I am not running the big profile wheels, but 13x6s with a Mini profile tyre.

I really like the ratios of my Cooper S. It was fun to pull through the gears.
Now, as I already have a gearbox, and it's a rod change, I don't think I can run close ratio gears. On the Mini Spares website, a company has developed a helical cut close ratio set, suitable for rod change.
Has anyone had experience with these?
At 130 odd pounds, I think I would consider it.

I'll have things like the mainshaft and bearings looked at, but have I missed any fundamental issues?

Any input on anything I have missed is appreciated.

Thanks guys and girls.
Tyson.

You can fit Cooper S gears to your gearbox no worries, only they are getting hard to find new now. If your gearbox is not one of the late DAM XXXX Gearboxes, all you need change is the 1st Motion Shaft and Laygear.

Got a link for the gearset you were looking at?

I have a rod change box rebuilt with Mk2 Cooper S ratios and competition oil pick-up. It has done ~3000kms since rebuild.

Could be a quicker/cheaper option for you perhaps. Search For Sales under my username, for more details.

Thanks for that 1310/71.
Certainly looks like a good way to go, economically!
Did it get all new bearings, main shaft, etc?
Who did the rebuild? - and what gearbox did you go to?

GT mowog, the link is here

Cheers for that. They have been NLA for a couple of years now. Kev's Gearbox certainly could be the G.O.
