Good evening folks!
I know there are a couple of threads on powdercoating at the moment, but nothing overly specific about my questions, and I didn't want to bring up grandma from her thread grave.

I will be removing both my front and rear subframes from my Moke in the coming weeks and they'll be pulled down completely to be checked over and rebuilt.

I am looking at finishes for the stripped frames.
I know that powdercoat is very popular, but some people don't like it as it has a tendency to chip and then expose the often bare steel underneath.
POR range of finishes are also suggested... but these require brushing on?
Do they offer a pressure pack variety?

I hate the look of brush strokes in anything - one of the reasons house walls are often sprayed instead of the ancient method of brushing!

I am open to any input.
Cheers all.
Tyson.

You can spray it, but as far as I know it does not come in a pressure pack. It is self leveling and brushes on very well (it is extremely runny and quite thin, but sets hard). It would be good on a subframe, the only thing that really affects it is UV light.

P.S. You need to use the whole system (Marine Clean & Metal Ready) and make sure it is totally dry (use a heat gun) as any moisture and it will bubble and not stick! :)

As owen1975richard said, the POR is self levelling, and you won't get any brush strokes. But do make sure the surface is clean and level. Because it's self-levelling, any small bumps (around welds or where rust once was) tend to stick out and don't get painted.

I suggest you get them sandblasted and apply a 2 pack epoxy primer and top coat.
It's tough, shiny (if you want it to be), not effected by UV light & wont peel off.

I've not long done some of mine in POR15. Just brush it on, by the time it dries, you'll be able to use it as a mirror, it's just amazing! Apply exactly as per instructions and wear gloves, it won't wash off! Best done on fresh abrasive blasted steel.

You won't be disappointed.

[quote="GT mowog"] Apply exactly as per instructions and wear glovesquote]

Thanks GT for mentioning the gloves! Not only does it stop the paint from becoming a tatoo for the next three weeks, but more importantly, the Marine Clean will give you terrible burns in both neat and dilluted form. You must wear gloves and safety glasses when using it, as it will continue to burn your skin even after you have washed it off! Alkaline burns are extemely painful!

Totaly agree with Richard. I have POR15 my front subframe and Kill Rusted both Primer and topcoat Kill Rust the Rear. Althought both haven't been critical looked at since its been on the road I was more than happy with my brushed on coats of the POR15 (buy the Kit)

Por15 front

I also POR Clear Coat my engine

Sub Frames get them Straight and Strong and paint them and forget them I went POR15 as I didn't want to think about it again and the UV side of it, well when is going to see the sun and you can do it at home just follow the instructions. Give them a call they are very helpfull and ask questions. Amazing enough warmth is your friend

And don't wipe your face when you're painting with POR15.
I looked in the mirror when I was finished........awww crap!
For the next 3 months all I heard was "whats that mark on your head?"

Agree with the above. Don't worry about brush marks with POR 15. Follow the instructions exactly and it works great. Expensive but worth it

Not on this PC. I'll post some tomorrow.

<EDIT> I did find this one, possibly not the best pic but you'll get the idea
