Hi guys, got my minimatic pretty much finished and ready for the road. My intention is to put the vehicle on club registration. Im a paid up club member, the car has already had an initial roadworthy inspection (and passed) but when I tried to get a unreg permit to drive the car home from the mechanics I was denied. As the car was previously a South Australian car it has never been registered in vic roads. And of course, the sa rego number, engine number and body number on rad shroud, ymas24 etc.. number on the id plate and the number stamped into the fire wall do not appear on vic roads records, so i was told "we will not give you a permit as your car does not exist". Fair enough so I came home and rang up. The lady on the phone was much nicer, so she said "ok" after I produced the permit number of when I got an unreg permit for it two years ago and emailed a new permit straight through to me, but did mention that my car does not exist. So i rang the SA rego dept who confirmed that yes, my matic did have that registration number, no it has not been reported stolen, or anything else sinister but that they only ever recorded the reg number and the body number, that of course does not match any of the numbers provided and he would not disclose the number recorded but suggest that it may have been recorded incorrectly back in '68, so one of the numbers I provided must have been close. The sa rego man advised me to contact the policy. My question is, will getting the vehicle put on club permit still require me to get a police check as normal full registration requires? obviously Vicroads wouldn't normally require to see the vehicle for club plates (well they haven't for our other minis) but do for the full registered 2 we have got. Any advice on what I should do?
Thanks and sorry for the long winded post. :?

Sorry to say, but the answer is "Don't know". Normally you just present the paperwork, pay your money and grab the plates. It sounds like you might strike trouble when they go to enter the details into the system, but I don't know what will happen. I can't imagine it will be anything more than bringing the car along so that they can verify the numbers.

Go to vicroads at Dromana. They're simple folk down there.

This person at VicRoads was silly and didn't know the rules.

Neither my Moke or imported Corona "existed" on the computer either, but I still got an unregistered vehicle permit for them no problems. Heaps of cars come across borders for legitimate reasons like yours.

As long as you can tell them (honestly) that the previous rego number was xxx.999 in South Aus and you put that on the form, you should have no problems with club permit. They are more relaxed about Club Permits than regular rego.

Cheers,
Brett.

thanks guys, I just wasn't sure. I knew I'd be in strife if I wanted it full registered, but no one had mentioned anything about club reg. I'll give it a shot and report incase anyone else has this issue.

For peace of mind, take whatever rego history you have from Sth Aus with you as proof Even if it's the corner of an old rego paper with rat pee all over it you found under the carpet. The best way to deal with VicRoads is drown them in paperwork. :D

Cheers,

or you could always wait until we have a centralised road system in this country and get rid of the state governments.

but you probably want your car to use before then

Josh, I was filling in the paperwork for Marion's club permit today - there's a spot for previous rego numbers on the form - maybe fill it in and see what they say, you may find someone who just stamps you through. BTW - we have a new club plate assessor.....

Been living in the Netherlands too long have we?

The NSW CMC voted overwhelmingly recently to retain the current NSW Club Plate system and not look to adopt the VIC/SA 90 day logbook scheme any time soon.

That just gives me another reason NOT to move back to NSW. :)

I've spoken to a lady at the vic roads call centre, drowned her in info, numbers, dates, anything I could get my hands on, her response "i've just checked with my manager, and as its only club permit it will be fine. just don't try to full register it, then we'll have to identify the vehicle and you will need a police inspection and restamp of body number" win!
And Kev, obviously we need to talk. Well that and it would be nice to catch up :)
