Hey guys, I did a search both here and on the UK forums and came up with zip. Im looking to fit a indicator/HL/wiper switch from a more modern car to free up some dash space.
First of all has anyone looked into this before, has anyone actually done this etc etc.
I imagine the wiring would be tough but not impossible, the only hard thing im thinking is finiding an indicator off a car with a similar sized steering column and getting the indicator cancel function to work.

Ideas people?

There's nothing you couldn't retrofit with enough time, I put the indicator and wiper stalks from a 2005 MINI into my deluxe, and its all wired up for full functionality:
Indicators, high / low beam, off/int/low/high wipers, wash, etc.

Other common ones are daihatsu or toyota or suzuki columns, commonly seen in conversion threads.

Did you swap the whole column or just the switches?
Was it hard getting the indicator cancel to work?

I still have the minis column, getting stalks to cancel is straight forward, its just a collar with a point to trigger the stalk back. Nearly all of them wok in that way.

If you want the easy way out I suggest getting rover mini switches, from the mid 80s on the wipers were on the stalks and in the 90s they added the light control up there too.

A Harley says, use Rover bits.

I have an 80's Rover column in my 71 Moke. The swap was straighforward, but the wipers took a little hassle to get working correctly.

The only slight hassle is the indicators are on the left and wipers on the right. The opposite to most Minis. Not a big deal to me as my daily is the same.

just for the sake of keeping costs down im going to have a crack at finding one from pick and payless, I'll keep the rovers in mind however. Would it be easier in your opinion to find a switch that will fit my column or swap the entire column?

If you're keeping costs down go the rover option.
Everything else will cost more that you'd think by the time its done.

The 1980 model on Mokes and UK Mini's from 1976 to about 1981 (or there abouts) used similar ones to the Rover mini but have the blinkers still on the correct side. Fairly easy to fit and if you match up the wires - colour for colour - works first go. There is one wire only that is a different colour (Black on the wiper switch and Green in the harness, just put them together).

If you look on ebay, a seller under the name of 'Landcrab' has them for about $180 or so.

i'm replacing mine with one of these

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LAND-ROVER-SERIES ... 33638df7b4

they're even cheaper now than what i paid. i think they're the same as the 'landcrab' ones GT mentioned. i remember saving over 100 bucks at the time...

i haven't fitted mine yet, but it looks a simple job. but while the cable tie and ducttape are holding the original i don't feel the need!

GT Mowog is correct. Late Moke ones will fit and do have the indicators on the right side.

I paid $100 for a complete s/h Rover column. I don't care about the wrong-sided indicators. :)

That's not a bad price (The steering lock alone is worth that) and it doesn't take long to get used to them on the other side (although I think you siad your other car is that way anyway - drives you made trying to remember from car to car when they are different).

Mmmmmm.....sorry, that looks similar to the 1970 to 1978 types that were fitted to the Clubbies, onlt with a different end - no provision for a wiper switch.

I usually remember sometime after I turn the wipers on.

i had a search to compare but that landcrab seller seems to be empty at the moment, or my ebay skills are dropping...

so on the subject of wipers is there any way of upgrading the wiper arms and blades to something that works?

That was from Brickworx when Steve was closing down, so I think he gave me a good deal. :)

Of my five cars that are road legal, three have indicators on the left and two have indicators on the right. I automatically adjust when I drive the Pathfinder (indicators on Right). But I drove the Corona Coupe to Grand Prix today (also indicators on right) and must have used the wipers by accident at least six times!!

My wife normally drives the Pathfinder so she has the same problem the other way around, when driving the Beetle, MR2 or Moke.
