Hi guys,
today Im attempting to take out the old engine and gearbox so I can start on the body work of the car.

I think Ive got everything covered except getting the driveshafts out of the gearbox/diff.

This is the first FWD car Ive done an engine on so Im at a loss and the engine crane needs to go back tonight.

How do they come out? A simplified explanation would be great!

Thanks a lot!

Depends on the type of joint...pot or cross unijointed thingy....search for driveshaft on ausmini....there are whole discussions...get yourself a manual ans follow the steps...be careful lifting as the the shafts can foul the engine as it is going up....

What type are they? if the are pot joint type you undo & release a ball joint ad they pop out, if the are rubber uni type you undo all the u bolts & removed the uni joint, if they are steel cooper s type you undo the 4 nyloc nuts & pry the uni off with a screw driver only if needed, usually a light tap gets the off.

Thanks guys, I have managed to get one off so far.

Im draining the oil now, I got a bit covered.

I have no idea what type they are, they arent uni's from what I can tell so far. There is the driveshaft from the wheels, then a big cylindrical section, then the section after that enters the diff. This just pulled out after a bit of convincing.

Once the oil has drained Ill tackle the other one and it should be ready to lift out.

I cant wait to get it all painted and put a daihatsu engine in its place!

You will find they are Pot Joints and should have just poped out once you released the top ball joint

Top and and some time the bottom may help....and pull the top out and the shaft should pull out of the pot joint.

Getting the pot joint is another joy unless the have a special tool but you may be lucky with two screw drivers on each side :?

I find you can get the shaft out of the pot joints on the way out without popping the ball joint...getting them back in is another story

If you've removed the pots from the side covers and find it hard getting them back in :x , change the wire circlips on the diff output shafts..
