I may be a touch skeptical, but looking on Carsales, 15 of the 40 mini's for sale are Cooper S's. This seems like a lot of these "rare" cars. Does anyone know how many Coopers were actually built/imported into Aus?

Don't get me wrong, if they are all genuine this is great. What is the best way to tell a true one from an imposter?

It's the old saying, 5,000 were built but only 15,000 are left.

Australian production figures were:

997cc Cooper (YKA2S1) - July 1962 - January 1964 - (approx) 2,800 (note - production dates are of course earlier than release dates)
998cc Cooper (also YKA2S1) - February 1964 - December 1964 - (approx) 1,100
Total Cooper production - 997cc & 998cc - 3,888 (or 3,887 according to one source)
Mk1 (YKG2S2) - August 1965 to April 1969 - 4,986
Mk 2 - (YKG2S4) - May 1969 to June 1971 - 2,418

(A refresher on chassis ID - Y=Australia; K= Morris Cooper; A=800cc-999cc; G=1000cc-1399cc; 2S=two-door sedan; 1=1st series of the model; 2=2nd series; 4=4th series of the model - whatever happened to YKG2S3?) Some later Mk2 Cooper S have chassis prefix of YG2S4, not YKG - interesting that the Cooper designation was removed.

Just pointing out a couple of things here.

First of all, be careful when asking the question 'How many coopers were built?' a Cooper is a specific model and very different to a Cooper S.

As for telling an original from a fake, there are many many things. Do a search here on ausmini, there are many threads about it. There are also a couple of really good articles the mini experience magazines.

I know someone who is contributing to that, its just too easy to give a car like that a v8 and some stripes, and some extra lights if you want it to be a gtho

Mine's a Cooper S, 'cos the badge on the boot says so. :P

Really, it's a K with add-ons.

The ad for mine had "Mk 2 Cooper S" as the header to grab attention, but to be fair to the PO, they never tried to claim anywhere else in the text that it is anything other than a tricked-up K.
