Hey guys and gals, I am hopeing some one knows the answers... On my van I am going for the shaved door look so am getting rid of the door handles and locks. And am going to use those bear latch popper systems, I am thinkin of doing the same for the rear doors but am unsure if that is "legal" as such? I have heard that there needs to be atleast one door that has a mechanical way of entering (having a handle to get access into the car) does anyone know if this is true? Cheers Dan |

Bit rusty on this but from memory (I'll find it and check later) you need some way to open the door from the outside, even if its a push button on the door mirror. Mechanical or electrical it diesnt matter, you need to press something and have it open. Those american things that sense your hand on the door panel doesn't count I don't think. Check your local laws as they vary from state to state. You'll also want a way of getting into the car should you have a flat battery or control system failure too, so consider your options carefully. |

This is the biggest worry I have with these sort of things. At least in a van you can get in through the rear doors. Not so in a sedan Mini, unless you have a hidden switch or keyhole somewhere. |

Thats why I don't like them, a crash will kill an electric circuit so if the doors are physically retained electrically thats a real problem. |

It would be quite simple to wire them so that they only stay closed while the electrical system is working, that way they would just pop open following a crash.

This option would require removal of any Lucas components first, or you'd by flying down the road and the doors would all suddenly fly open! |

Why don't you do some custom door handle job that is manual with a modern key but looks different. A spring mounted flush cover over a recessed handle for instance. Kind of like a kick foothold on the side of a jet if you know what I mean. All you would see on the outside is the edge of the cover and pressing your fingers on it would reveal the handle and lock. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out. Have you seen those nifty handles on the rear doors of some of the Alfas (don't care enough to know which model)? They are concealed up high toward the rear of the window frame. They are the perfect combination of being a normal style handle that is impossible to find. Tim |
