Just wondering if anyone knows what style of champion plug caps and what colour lead they were using for the Aussie Cooper S in late 68.

Hi Phillb
That is a very good question.
I have not seen an original photo yet of a Aussie cooper s say 68 t0 71 in that department.
The best that I have come a cross through my restoration is that a dark green lucas lead was used with a numbered sticker for each lead for the plugs. Plug caps! well thats the hard part as I have only seen photo's form manuals and can't find a part number for that year or up to 1970 but champion was used.
Some one must have a photo?

i've got two sets of those leads, i've just pulled one cap off so they would fit into my side-entry cap off my 850.

Well,

I got a set of those in the pic on my 2/70 Cooper S, as well as a coil marked around 9/69........could they all be original?

They both still work!!!!!!!

Copper cores, sturdy plastic insulation and 40 years and still working. I won't be getting rid of them in a hurry...

I've got a set of the other style (Thanks Poeee) and have them on the 997 atm. This is the only image I have from the brief time they were the Cooper S engine. The coil lead is a standard silicone lead.

Hi
I have found what I think is an old Australian parts manual for mini and 1100 PUB1011M.

Caps 8G576 I think that may be champion
All so has Sleeve identification part numbers starting 851860
Leads as HYL470/7 but also has AYG9191 to AYG9194
Also gives how long leads should be.
All engines seem to use the same cap part number but shows two different photo's of caps in manual
Coil 62941019 I think lucas HA12
As for colour of leads well its a guess but mine would be dark green.

I should be clear that I am unsure if the second set is the original set of leads, but they are period, and they are very prevalent on minis of that era...etc etc. I'm sure someone will be able to confirm yes or no however..

Sometimes I am happy to think that if you could pull into Repco of the 70s and have picked up a set of these very green Champion leads, then that makes them period, and that is worthwhile too if it blows wind up ones skirt, as it does mine.. If they are OEM for a mid 60s mini, then that just makes it a little better again..

Thanks for all the replys and info.

Well I'm happy to say that someone has very generously given me a set of round numbered caps & leads the same as in the first pic by Mick. Plus a MkI dissy cap!! (Thanks again, if you are reading this :P )

I'm of the opinion these are probably the right cap. I noticed the photo of a motor in the Scientific Publications Workshop manual also has these leads/caps.

All I need now is a MkI dizzy. :lol:

A question to anyone familiar with these leads.... The caps seem to be permanently crimped to the cable. They dont unscrew. They seem to be in good order but if I needed to replace the terminal and or the lead can it be done?
