On the van i have a oil pressure guage but the oil light on the binnacle is not connected. I was wanting to connect up the oil light just to have it working, but found very little clearance between the existing oil fitting on the block and the vacuum advance to be able to fit the appropriate sensor adaptor. Am i making sense? So with having a oil pressure gauge, is an operating oil light on the speedo binnacle really neccessary and of any advantage?

A light is a big advantage. It draws attention to the gauge. If the pressure dips in a corner the light will ******, while you mightn't notice the gauge because you are concentrating on the corner the flash of light will catch your attention.

you mention pressure and light. i thought, for no educated reason, that the light would only illuminate if the oil level is low. whats the pressure gauge going to react to low oil level?

If the oil level is too low, the pressure gauge reading will drop on RH bends (like roundabouts taken with verve...) :P
There goes your big end bearings if it happens repeatedly... (nope, I'm not joking).

Experience of rebuilding low mileage 1275 (A and A+) engines where their owners did this...
Both cranks had about .005-.007" ovality on their crankpins.
Mains were fine.

The problem with standard oil light switches is they only come on at stupid low pressure, like 8 psi or something.
You can get 22psi ones if you look around.

I just use a gauge, but I watch it.

I used to get the ones that came on at about 22psi. It lets you know before you have a problem.

Just gun a "T" piece out of the block and have a light and a gauge.

unfortunatley most people think that the oil light is just there to tell you that you need to put more oil in :(

Thats the situation. The existing adaptor will be replaced with another but as you can see there is very little room. Is the dissy out? jubblies i think that adaptor, once the fittings are on would hit the vac advance. T piece could be the go, kenno.
