Morris Mini K
(March 1969 - June 1971)
This was unique to Australia and was to be called the Morris Mini Deluxe MK II but the decision was made to call it the 'K' (which stands for Kangaroo) in the spirit of the Ford Mustang and Plymouth Barracuda. Badged as a 'Morris Mini 1100' with three separate badges on boot only and side decals (as pictured).
The car came standard with a 1098cc engine with a claimed output of 50bhp and for the first time in Australian Mini's an all synchro gearbox with standard 998 differential (3.765:1), 10 inch wheels, Drum brakes all round (although there had been plans to include 7.5 inc front discs), Hydrolastic Suspension, Dished padded steering wheel with 'BMC' centre logo, Three dial central instruments (Smith's 90 mph speedo, oil pressure and temp gauge), an alternator. It did however still only come with single speed windscreen wipers, manual window washer and the heater was optional.
Whilst this car was known as the Mk2 it still retained the Mk1 rear lights and external door hinges but unlike it UK counterpart it had wind-up windows and quaterlight windows, some of the later models even had lift up door handle (like the clubmans).
It was available in a number of colours, including White, Aubergine (described as "dusky mulberry") and Portofino Gold (strong yellow/orange). Upholstery colours included Champagne (beige) and Black. The front seats were very similar to the later Clubman high-backs.
This was the last 'round-nose' mini to be introduced in Oz, and was built in Sydney from a claimed 80% local content and was said to hold 30% of the small car market. It sold for AU$1780.
