Gday everyone, Happy Monday to you all.
I just bought another mini on the weekend, and going by the body number i think it is a mini K. I was just wanting to get some info on K's. What makes a K a K? Some people in Canberra may know this car, it was the pink mini that was owned by the Pink Pump petrol station. I felt a bit strange driving a pink mini for some reason, lucky it was dark when i drove it home.
Steve.

I believe the binnacle was different to the cooper s, it had a different speedo and indicator lights on the binnacle itself. The K also had hydro as standard.

cheers

oh I was just referring to the plastic binnacle...not the gauges.

I quite like the K/ Pooper S binnacle.....much nicer than a deluxe or 850 one....even nicer than a Clubby dash!

Or some people that used to live in canberra.
I remember driving past that servo everytime i had to get bits from ford spares for the big red $$$ pit(as opposed to the little white pit)
I'm glad they sold it, so someone can actually look after the poor thing

Thanks for the replies, the car does have hydro and the 3 gauge dash, i thought the K's came with lift up door handles, this doesn't, could have been changed i guess.
NAV, i think i did rescue the car from a young guy, who was going to make it into a ricer, it had the back seat taken out and replaced with a nice MDF speaker box, took up the whole back. It also has a BIG muffler welded onto the standard exhaust, very bodgy. It did come with 12 inch Minilites though, so I had to buy it.

Mini K came out in March 69, based on the Mini Deluxe, but got the 1098 motor and a 4 synchro remote box.
Binnacle is same as a MK2 Oz Cooper S (or late MiniMatic, for that matter) but it has a 90MPH speedo and C-H temp gauge instead of the C-N-H Cooper one.
Only the last of the K's (and S's) had lift up handle Clubbie doors, these were made in 1971.

Sorry NAV, this car will be my daily driver after i fix the rust in the floorpan. Doc, that sounds like the dash that is in it. On the rego papers it is listed as a 01/1969 model, they probably guessed , because i can't find any complience plate on it???. All it has is the Dulux paint sticker on the firewall and the VIN on the radiator shroud.

It should have a ID plate behind the cluch/brake master cylinders with car number, engine number and colour codes on it.

Many early 69 cars had no ID plate. But there should be a number stamped into the firewall next to the clutch MC.

`VIN' plates came in towards the end of 69.

Might have to go searching with the wire brush when i get home, years of paints and tar and crap on the firewall, I might find something then.

Morris Mini K
(March 1969 - June 1971)

This was unique to Australia and was to be called the Morris Mini Deluxe MK II but the decision was made to call it the 'K' (which stands for Kangaroo) in the spirit of the Ford Mustang and Plymouth Barracuda. Badged as a 'Morris Mini 1100' with three separate badges on boot only and side decals (as pictured).

The car came standard with a 1098cc engine with a claimed output of 50bhp and for the first time in Australian Mini's an all synchro gearbox with standard 998 differential (3.765:1), 10 inch wheels, Drum brakes all round (although there had been plans to include 7.5 inc front discs), Hydrolastic Suspension, Dished padded steering wheel with 'BMC' centre logo, Three dial central instruments (Smith's 90 mph speedo, oil pressure and temp gauge), an alternator. It did however still only come with single speed windscreen wipers, manual window washer and the heater was optional.

Whilst this car was known as the Mk2 it still retained the Mk1 rear lights and external door hinges but unlike it UK counterpart it had wind-up windows and quaterlight windows, some of the later models even had lift up door handle (like the clubmans).

It was available in a number of colours, including White, Aubergine (described as "dusky mulberry") and Portofino Gold (strong yellow/orange). Upholstery colours included Champagne (beige) and Black. The front seats were very similar to the later Clubman high-backs.

This was the last 'round-nose' mini to be introduced in Oz, and was built in Sydney from a claimed 80% local content and was said to hold 30% of the small car market. It sold for AU$1780.

If you want to check out a real good one JAM's 'pops' is the feature car on the NSWMC site at http://www.miniclub.com.au/gallery/popos/feature.htm
