I have Thea red light that keeps coming on and off spasmodically on my dash, I have replaced the alternator and battery and have recently serviced the car ( it's full of oil) yet I can't think what would be causing this light to come on,

Any ideas ?

Nick.

red ones an oil pressure light.. check the connector on the block to see if the wire is connected, if it is then u may have some deeper issues

Even on an SPI rover ? I thought the left light was oil and the the right was alternator, doesn't explain how I drove to work yesterday and then had a flat battery ( I have since replaced the battery) I will check it tommorow though

Red is usually the alternator light.
Orange is usually the oil light.

I say usually because they are sometimes hooked up arse about.

They're both red on rover gauges: oil is bottom right.

going on that diagram, its oil... perhaps i should recheck my oil..

as i said before, still doesnt explain why my battery went flat.. perhaps it was on the way out anyway.. will investigate the oil/oil pressure situation tommorow after work

Could be fault in printed circuit. Also, doesn't the warnig light circuit 'excite' the alternator windings to start charging......does on some cars. :?:

alternator windings ? youve lost me on that...

the light sometimes comes stays on, other times is goes then on, sometimes wit will ****** occasionally.. othertimes it wont be on at all...

the oil was just above "low" on the dipstick, ill top that up tonight, i doubt the light would come on when its only that low...

Maybe the wire from the sender is earthing somewhere as this is how they work.

light comes on when engine has low oil preassure ...

low oil level will do this but a worn out switch , broken wire , or the one and only worn engine ..

It's easy to fault find. Unplug the sensor and drive the car round. If the light still comes on then its earthing somewhere.
If it doesn't, then its the sensor or an actual pressure problem (could be as simple as wrong oil but I doubt it).

i just topped up the oil so its definately full now.. and the light still flickers and comes on and off, etc.. will check the pressure valve tommorow..

can someone tell me where abouts the sensor is ?

engine still pulls fine, so i wouldnt have thought it was a worn engine (hasnt done 100,000km yet..)
