Post subject: | Wheel bearing issues |
I fitted my new rear wheel bearings and they appear to be tighter than I would like. The hub will spin but not very freely. The type I have are marked in a foreign language, the first word is "Radlagersatz" GHK1548. The bearings are marked as "NP880810" What is the latest on the availability of mini wheel bearings? Can you still buy Timken? |

I have not had any problems buying timken. Are these the rear bearings? |

The p/no for Timken rears is 07087X. Karcraft lists them, but check if they are genuine. I bought in some GHK1548 kits from Minispares, they are genuine Timken kits in Unipart boxes. |

My GHK1548 kits came from Minisport UK. Seems as though they need an extra few thou in the centre packing? |

I think I see part of the problem.......I only use Timken Bearings and the latest ones with the built in spacer are for hubs different to ours. I fit a 5 thou shim between them, then you'll have the required ~1 thou pre-load and happy days. |

For rear wheel bearings , can you set them up like say holden front wheel bearings , or trailer bearings ? if they are tapered bearings . what is the difference , other than mini rears have a spacer , I can see why you would need a spacer on the ball roller bearings so you don't push the centres out , but I don't understand why you would realy need the spacer on the taper type bearigs I'm confused . can someone please explain ? me dumb ! Slacko, BMC designed the rear hub bearing+spacer setup the same as the fronts, but as there is no CV/drive flange assembly to keep tight in the back, I see no reason to not do as you say and set the preload finger tight with the nut, then pin it. If my Timken van ones are tight when fitted it's what I'll be doing. |

Just fitted the timken's that came in the uniparts box part No. GHK1548. These have their own built in spacer that meet in the centere of the rear hubs. I have no idea why you would put spacers on tapered bearing (NOT NEEDED). Anyhow one side tightened up as per instructions and was perfect. The other side once locked up allowed the hub the move in and out a few thou. Giving the effect of a loose bearing. The only way it could be rectified was to hone a few thou off that built in spacer so the tapered bearing could pull into the tapered cups more. Obviously those who had a tight bearing would have to insert a shim to stop the tapered bearing pulling in to far. So thinking about it, I wish I had the tight ones, that way I would just back off the nut to the next spit pin hole and problem solved. Just like any other tapered bearing. FWD fronts totally different, they have to be done up tight. |

How are other front wheel drive cars set up , like toyota coralla , hyundi excel , holden viva , astra , all them other things? Mark |

Most "modern" front wheel drive cars use a 1 piece bearing, which is pressed into the hub with the flange pressed into the bearing and then the cv joint done up tight. There are exceptions though, but this is the norm. |

The spacers on the rear bearings are important, they help to stiffen the stub axle. |
