How loud can a mini be before it is ilegal?
Dad seems to think that my mini is to loud, and im just curious of how loud is to loud. To me personaly i dont think its that loud compared to other minis, but he reckons its not legal.
Its an 1100 40thou oversize, 1 1/2 SU and 1 3/4 RC40 exhaust. Does this setup sound like it will be to loud?
I know it you dont know how loud it exactly is but im hoping someone is running a similar setup and can let me know.

Cheers, Steve

That's almost exactly the same as mine (mine's 60 thou over), except depending on my mood I swap the RC40 single box for a short hotdog which most definitely is too loud to be legal.

With the RC40 on it, it's almost certainly legal and is how mine passed RWC. I'm amazed at the difference to be honest, the note is almost identical but the RC40 is more of a purrrr to the hotdog's BARK! ;)

Pre 1983 the limit was 96db, after that the limit is 83db.

Plenty of cars out there are over the limits, like every kid's riced-up Lancer or Commodore around here.

It really depends on the tilt of your kilt at the roadworthy inspection. If the inspector drags out his decibel meter and its over 96 then its a fail and a retest.

The same when the police officer has you on the side of the road for some infringement. If he or she doesn't like you or the car and its noisy they will require it to be tested.

I personally like a rorty note from a mini but simply noisy is a turn off for me. Its distracting and irritating when your driving the car. Drones through the shell. Its the note and the lope that tells you about an engine and its state of tune not the volume.

thanks guys :D

Personaly i dont think any cop is going to have a go at me if my exhaust is just a tad bit to loud. m dure they would rather go after some other P plater in their VN commodores.

If u want to test and have an iPhone or a mate with one there are decibel testing apps u can download.

The one I have is called "Decibel". No idea how accurate but should give u an idea.

You probably need to know what distance they take the reading at.

When they used to do it for CAMS testing, there was a set procedure (which is probably still in the manual?) that specifies the conditions - RPM, distance from the exhaust and elevation above the exhaust from memory. I'd be surprised if the road authorities were substantially different to that.

The question should be: "How loud can your eardrums stand before it's too loud?"

I drove to Penrith last night on M4 and when it hit 110 @ 4100rpm it became almost unbearably loud. Luckily it was only for a few minutes before my turn off. Permanent hearing loss anyone?

(1330, 45 Dellorto on a 5.25 intake + ramtubes which means they sit nearly on your lap, 2" twin box exhaust, Dynamatted interior)

Should have heard it when it was a single box 2", used to set off car alarms as I drove by in parking lots...

I do this all the time with the clubby's 1.75" straight through job

I think it's great fun!

how loud is too loud? EVERY Harley on the road! they're just offensive and they don't get defected....

i've had super loud cars and super quiet, i think it's too loud when you consider wearing ear plugs for any cruise over 1/2 hour long...

and without denigrating your father... most dad's think cars are too loud! :P

As somebody who has had minis (and other cars) since 1965, I think we have all been through the noisy car syndrome. We used to have cars loudly revving its rockers off and people in other cars going past smirking at us.

I know i used to think they were supercilious %%$#@^& but now i really do wear their shoes and the same smirk. I can pick a good hot motor at a hundred yard regardless of its decibel level and I smirk at noisy exhausts without a hot motor to drive it.

Yep my eldest son is now thirty - I am that age.
