Does anyone know a good machine shop in Sydney as I have got hold of 1 finished and 3 unfinished 10' x 5" alloy mini wheels? The finished wheel would be the template for the other 3.

This is my one and only barn find! :D

Well.......

My old boss who used to have minis many, many, many decades ago and now has Austin Healeys and MG V8s, found these in his shed. He had no use for them so I took them off his hands.......

They definitely have decades of storage showing and the alloy should be hardened by now! That's all I know.....will try and get some more pics up soon....glad they are of interest.

Will try and get them usable - would be nice on my Mk1 resto!

Love barn (or shed) finds! :D

Be careful- I'm sure the original rosepetals were magnesium. It doesn't age well, it gets brittle. Listen for BANG when cornering...

I'd be checking what the alloy is before proceeding.

Thanks,

Pretty stoked - even if it turns out they are unusable.... how can I check their composition easily? I checked with the guy who had them and he said that he thought they were not magnesium, but want to get them checked before spending money getting them machined....

Any ideas?

Take a scraping and see if you can light it - if it burns with an intense white flame it's magnesium

Yep..... put one of them in the fire, you'll soon learn if they're mag or alloy.

Update...

Wheels professionally confirmed as alloy, not magnesium :D
Was quoted $300 per wheel to finish the 3 wheels - no painting or cleaning up :(

Tried the guys Gafmo mentioned but they only do repairs.

Guess will keep trying other companies, but think the wheels just need the outside rims machined off, and I could do the rest. Even if not exactly the same outside, the inside rims don't need touching, and the wheels would be balanced when tyres fitted.....

Anyone have any ideas?

I got 5 wheels machined for $150 at a place called Leon's Engineering in Artarmon, the guys name is Gary and his dad does odd jobs.

This was just the machining and I needed to polish them and paint but they came up nice.

This is done in a lathe so obviously they just do the rims, not the spokes.

Worth a shot.

Cheers
