So how long is a piece of string?

I know that carby settings, timing etc are all engine specific,

I’m about to fit a HIF44 and wondering if anyone can give me a bit of a run down on what needle they reckon I should run?

1275, unknown cam – quite lumpy – seems to like to idle around 1000-1100, Aldon yellow electronic dizzy, RC40.

The carb is coming with a BDL needle in it. Would this be a good base point to try and get it tuned at? My last tuner spent a great deal of time on the dyno shaping a needle (for my HS6) is there a ‘blank’ needle to be had for him to do this again?

Any info is great,

Cheers

So your problem is finding the correct piece of string :?:
Not how long it is.

Sorry I cant help but I don't believe any one will be able to give an answer because there are way too many variables to affect the needle starting point.

Any way good luck.

Hay all
Woodwormm I’m about to do the same thing.
Just spent a bit of the weekend putting a rebuild kit through my hif44 and started to wounder about what needle I should be using.
I’m still yet to put my 1275 together but getting close :D :D

Any way I found this on the net http://www.winsu.co.uk and it looks good but yet to register to get the full program.
Me a bit of a tight arse and the price to register it…. it is the cost of a needle…and I’m only going to use it once.
Any body on here using this program……….???????

Cheers Neil

So they let you download the program for free? But make you pay to register it! Doh!

Yep :D …… but the program works……….but doesn’t give you the needle size at the end..... well it does, sort of……but does let you do all sort of things……but I’m still seeing how it works.

Just checked the web site and found out it only cost sixteen bucks (got to love the aussie $ at the moment) to register……. might check me pay pal account next and see if I have any thing left in it.
Cheers Neil

We need a registry of who's paid the money for WinSU, so we can bombard them with requests all day. :P Send them your saved configuration, get them to send through the results with the question marks removed.

Thanks for the reminder, Tobermary, I forgot about WinSU... I know that nothing's going to be exactly right from guesswork (not as good as my local dyno would get me), but at least it's indicative of which direction they're likely to go. And, even better, I was able to figure out what the needles were, in spite of the question marks. 8) It recommended two needles with exactly the same profile (same amount rich at both middle and high revs), and three characters in the needle name. A little bit of searching with Simon's SU Needle Thingy, and I had it. :) Needle turned out to be significantly leaner than what I'm running.

An interesting coincidence with the seller of WinSU? He occasionally sells the license on eBay. And he also sells needles - in fact, I bought my needles from him. I paid less for 2 needles posted from the UK than I would've paid in postage alone locally. When the postage for something that can fit comfortably in an envelope with a 60c stamp is $15, it's hard not to look for other options. :(

And for anyone else looking at WinSU, it's really Win32SU. It no likey 64bit OS's. I had to install it in XP Mode on my Win 7 64 machine.
