To all you mini psychics!

My mini has developed a worrying knocking noise coming from diff/gear box/bottom of the engine area. The noise tends to occur after 5-10 minutes of driving, and only under cruising and decelleration. the knocking is related to the speed of the car (as the car slows down, the knocking slows). It also tends to happen when im turning right.

The knocking has no effect on performance.


I know this is a long shot, but has anyone experienced anything like this before? im stumped and cant think of what it can be! (CV's are new, all boots are secured)

Dave, are the inner c/v's new? and are the upper engine steady bushes ok, i've had some weird clunking noises from the inner c/v's for both of those reasons.

Hi guys,

Years ago I a similar issue, trying to chase a knocking sound in the drive train. I could feel it under my left foot on the fire wall under the clutch pedal. I thought it was on the r/h side, but turned out to be a collapsed l/h inner wheel bearing, the one up against the CV joint. Destroyed the CV as well as, the bearing had spun on the CV & dug into the CV.

That was my next suggestion. It would have to be royally shagged to make a knocking noise, usually a wheel bearing whirs for a while before then...

Well I was being serious...

What type of gearbox is it? that will tell us if it's a pot joint driven or rubber uni joint. I've seen worn rubber uni joints wear all the way through the gearbox casing, so beware! Jack the car up and have a look around, it should be pretty obvious in plain sight if the noise is that loud and the problem is outside the engine.

I've heard of something like this, maybe it could be the drive shaft coupling hitting the extractors, that's if you have extractors?.... but your noise is probably something else

I had a similar problem with rubber uni joints, they came undone. As they become looser they started hitting the gearbox after passing a certain speed. I could not figure out what the thumping was.

Eventually they fell apart, the car stopped and I had a large wear mark in the back of my gearbox casing........6 hours from home. A VERY helpful Tumut local helped me out big time.

I have Uni joints. I jacked the car up over the weekend and had a good look around. there was a very small amount of play when I rotated the pot joint by hand. I couldn't find anything that was fouling on the gearbox/extractors anywhere.

Shane, it feels very much like you described! I can feel it with my left foot under the clutch pedal.

However, I replaced the CV's, wheel bearings and all when i converted to disc brakes about 9 months ago. I hope that isnt the problem!

Thanks for your suggestions everyone, looks like ill be spending some more hours in the shed over the weekend! I need to get her right before Bay to Birdwood! (there is a mini only section this year!!!!)

I couldn't here anything over the induction noise of a 45 DCOE on a 9" long manifold with ram tubes. The inlet to the ram tubes was almost 10" inside the cabin! :lol: :lol:
