Can a windscreen be ground down
I have a feeling that the new screens we get now are to big
after having problems with my own
Mine is not the only one that I have seen like this
Another I saw looked like the screen was about to pop out
Help Please

Sometimes the rubbers can be the parts to blame. There are good and bad ones.

you may be right , this is another thing I have to explore
it may have something to do with the depth of the channels for the glass and the steel . I am going to over lay the new sreen I have with an old one and see if there is any difference

The reason some screens look like they want to pop out is the rubber bunches in the corners and rolls, usually pulling the window in a fraction.

At the moment I have a brand new smashed laminated windscreen fitted
and I can tell you there is no way you could put a filler strip in,
Profesenial windscreen company installed this,
after he smashed it he packed up , spat the dumby and went home

This happened to me recently. Took the Chinese front windscreen back to obriens and they had an Australian made one on the rack which they fitted cheap. Cant remember the good brand will have a look at car tomorrow.

Well thats not very professional of him, and leaves you with a problem.

I'd find it interesting if the windscreen is the part that's made wrong, I know the windows are a tight fit (they have to be, there's only a quarter inch of steel holding it in) but with a good new (soft) window rubber, and a window frame that we'll assume is not damaged / repaired out of size, it should still go in.

Can you measure the opening in your car? There's always the possibility the issue is there.

Something less of a factor is the instal man: personally I prefer to see an older chap or a marine / agricultural glass person doing these old cars, lots of the young blokes only know how to work silicone guns. That was certainly the case with the hot rodder down the road who wasn't happy with his smashed windscreen.

I had one installer try to fit the Chinese one and he had to put so much pressure on it he gave up. This is when he said it needed linishing because the two halfs that are laminated together over hang differently and then stuffs the angle of the corner of the screen.

I agree with you , that is why I am not willing to aim blame to any one point , or person at the moment. as you will see in my build thread I prehung the doors to check all the gaps , we also put an old windscreen in the hole to make sure that the car was alighed before it was sent to the painter . That does not mean that the body may be out of shape (god dam I hope not after all the work that has gone into it )
The out of square did cross my mind so we took a few measurement
door openings , diaginal , verticals , all came up spot on
will check the other new screen I have here and see what comes of it

I believe some of the current windscreens need about 4mm ground off to make them fit.
Some of the Windscreen Obrien shops may know already about this issue?

well here is what I have come up with
I have a old windscreen here and the new chipped one
when you lay the new one over the old one it sits nearly flat , but rocks diaganially from righthand bottom corner to top left
when you place the old one on the new it sits high in the middle
bottom edge to bottom edge side by side the old screen has a higher arc
I think because the curve is flatter on the new sreen this makes it wider
and also explains why it whats to pop out in the top corners .
I am going to install the old one and see how we go

I'm with Harley, I won't let another young guy install a screen in my car. O'Briens did mine last year and made a real mess of it -- not only was the screen too big and therefore difficult to fit, the young guy didn't know how to use the infill tool properly. He slipped with it several times, taking paint off each time :evil:

Yes -we have been having the same problems over here.
There must have been a bad batch,as the only way to get the screen to fit is to grind them on the corners.

Yep, same here to, had a banded lami to go back in, the windscreen guy forced it in and fractured it, blamed the car, when fitting the rubber inside with the tool scratched the paint off along the top of the heater vent holes :evil: Got It sorted tho, now has a clear lami fitted and it went in well :)

I had two screens fitted to my two Mini's earlier this year. Tried 3 major chains they didn't want to touch them, one of them referred me to "a young bloke who loved the older cars" - he came to the house and did a great job at a good price ($200 each supply and fit, using existing rubbers and filler strip). Guess who gets my windscreen jobs now!
