Post subject:  oil pressure cable problem
hi all

ive struck a small snag.
I was priming the engine yesturday just turing it over with out the plugs in just to get the oil circulating threw the engine...and noticed the oil pressure hose was leaking.

its not a cheap one...think it was $50 from uk

Ive done it up tight but its still not sealing on each end.

the one im using is this kind.

I was thinking it may be becaause the threaded bolts diddnt come with this hose even though they fit ?
as it had a crapy plastic type last time.

the bolts in question are the ones on the end the one that goes into the block and the one that goes on the gauge.

might have to upgrade to an autometre item seeing as im using all autometer gauges anyway?

With my cheapie plastic oil hose it has a small fibre sealing washer that fits inside the nut and seals against the guage and the engine block adaptor.
Maybe your missing this?
Other option may be to use some plumbers tape?

Mine came with nothing but I put on some plumbers thread tape and it doesn't seem to leak. I put it all togethor, ran it for a while and tightened it up abit when it was warm and it's all been fine.

Be very careful when using plumbers tape on the oil system - I'd only use it as a last resort. A piece of tape breaking off into the oil lines could have some pretty big consequences.

well i found out the problem..

the hose dosent suit the little nut adapters ..
the one on the block wich is a standard bmc item and the one on the gauge are not tapered....so it wont seal...
bugger ...might have to install another hose kit ...cheap one for now untill I can sort it out the right way...might have to pay enzed a visit...

what a pain...

The standard fitting onto the gauge itself has a tiny flat seal in it. If it ain't there, it won't seal.. :wink:

Description- gauge washer, pipe to gauge.

True, but if it is only between the threads it should be OK and have no way of getting into the oil system.

Till you pull it apart and put it back together a few times. :lol:
If you are thinking of using plumbers tape do it properly and use something like this...

I have seen too many problems caused by people using tape. The best problem was an oil pressure gauge not working because a tiny bit of tape blocked the pipe into the gauge. The worst problem was a broken oil pump drive caused by a bit of tape jamming the drive.

Nothing to do with fixing the leaky pipe but a funny thing. My mate's Mini had oil guage in centre console and the crappy nylon tube popped off the back of the guage, took about a minute before he noticed about 4 litres of GTX Castrol pooling around his feet. Pissed myself laughing, motor was fine, carpets trashed. :lol:

My old Formula Vee leaked oil out the back of the gauge and all over my legs. I couldn't see it as my legs went through a bulkhead/dashboard. So my new red driving suit was never quite the same after that. :lol:

yup - I know of an Austin A90 that filled up the floor well with nice warm engine oil!
