Post subject: | Project and re-register a Mini advise |
So im thinking of doing what ive been putting off, major resto/rebuild on my mini. Paint, interior etc. As long as i find a good shell. So im going to have to take the car off the road for who knows how long so im just wondering whats involved in re-registering a mini after its been off the road and how long does it have to be out of rego before handing in plates. Also your advise and opinion/experience of your project, ie.shell swapping. whats the right way to go about this. Thanks Toast. |

Not sure what the deal is with handing plates back in But it sounds like you want to find a good shell, and swap everything over out of your LS (Sorry to hear it hasn't sold, it was a bit too expensive for me a while back, and I had to buy something else!) If you plan to de-register it and fix the shell All you'll need to do is get it blueslipped to re-register it I just registered my moke, which I bought from victoria, and had no rego history of, all I had was a receipt, and a compliance plate. So, here's what to do: Fix your shell Get everything transferred over Have a receipt for the shell and the motor (I presume you'll use your 1380, not sure how it works if you already own the motor, could always just write yourself a receipt anyway) Get it roadworthy, and go get your blueslip If you had info on previous registration of the new shell, bring that. If not, let the blueslipper know you have no previous papers Get your green slip Take your blueslip, greenslip (must have a hardcopy), body receipt and your motor receipt down to the RTA and get it registered. I'll PM you a good place to take your mini, he likes mini's there. |

In NSW if the car is currently registered you are obliged to hand the plates in when you cancel the rego. The plates are always the property of RTA, they are not yours. You can pay them to hold them for you, for an annual fee. Good luck with this though, they lost mine and had to remake them. In the meantime the buggers charged me for a set of yellows... ![]() |

Can I ask why shell swapping is more of an advantage to you than repairing the current shell? Won't need to jump through as many hoops if its the same body. |

Im hoping to find a shell that has already been preped. The shell i have now is in need of a welder and im not to confident in giving it it a go. I have a mate that will paint it for me but only if i repair it myself, to keep the cost down obviously. |

My opinion only, but It'll save a lot of money and hassle in the long run for you to repair the body. Whatever money is set aside for another shell should be enough to some welding on the one you have. Anyone who sells you another shell ready for paint will either be asking a lot of money, or be selling something full of bog or bent or whatever (not pointing fingers, not saying people are crooks, its just in my logic is a car ready for paint in good nick wouldn't be cheap if its done properly). All that aside, theres a certain level of satisfaction knowing your car is fixed and good for another few years of road use. ![]() |

Yeah fair point, hadn't thought of it that way. I guess its cause at one stage and still an option i was thinking of going for a round nose or a van. |
