Thanks for this - now I think I know why I can't get the new cable to fit
Been trying and trying to slide the new inner down the old outer and no way can I get it to "engage" at the bottom

Hi, My Moke has a 1990 1275 A+ Auto from a Metro fitted. The speedo has been all over the place for a long time. I traced the problem to a chewed up cable at the gearbox end. So I bought a new standard Mini speedo cable and today I tried to fit it. The square section of the new cable would not slide into the shaft on the drive gear, at the gearbox end. I removed the drive gear and compared it to the ones in every other Mini gearbox I had in the shed. This one has been designed for a smaller cable end - still a square drive, but the square is about 0.5mm smaller so a normal mini cable doesn't fit!! Has anyone seen this issue before? Thanks, |

Can you grind/file the end of the new cable down to fit? |

i had a problem with a new speedo cable, too big for gearbox end . had to sand it down to make it fit in the square drive... |

u can sand or file it a bit, just be careful the wires dont start to fray, if they do trim them off . |

Hi, The new cable is from Karcraft and is stamped "UK". It fitted every other gearbox I have, including my MG Metro powered Mayfair. It's just this one drive that is a mongrel size. Late Metro automatics must have used a different cable, goodness knows why! Maybe an SPi Auto speedo drive would fit?? I tried the inner cables from my Mayfair and my Traveller, neither fitted the mongrel shaft. Then I tried to linish the new cable down enough to fit the mongrel shaft, but when I got close the end frayed badly. With the outer layer of inner cable removed it's now too small. The cable can just about rotate inside the shaft, so it's now a bin job. That's what happened to the old cable - it started rotating freely. It seems it was filed down to fit in the past. I can't recall if I did that or not, as it was six years ago. I think I have a solution. I've been using the cable to drive a speed sensor behind the dash for a signal to my VDO speedo. The sensor fits the mongrel shaft on the gearbox perfectly, so I'm going to relocate it down there. It will require a little grinding and trimming of the part where the speedo cable outer normally fits. This will do away with the need for a cable completely. Cheers, |

For the interest of those in the future that may face the same problem, late A series Metros from chassis B5000001 use a speedo cable with a smaller end - part number 401070-60. Cheers, |
