i received my new (to me- item is rebuilt) HIF44 today...

i won't be getting out to the shed tonight but i'm keen to start the swap in my head...

can anyone tell me which hoses go where? and what the 3 inlet/outlets are for?

my guess would be fuel in is the bottom pipe?

big top one is to be attached to breather pipe/pcv?

other top one i have no idea...

and while i'm asking basic questions...

when fitting is it manifold - spacer - abutment plate - carby

or manifold - abutment plate - spacer - carby ?

of course with gaskets at all joins :D

Do yourself a favout before you fit it to the car. The HIF has an achilles heel in that the choke is controlled by a "O" ring similar to that found on many motorcycle carbies.

This "O" ring does not suffer drying out after exposure to fuel. Download a manual on the HIF and pull out the choke mechanism and check this ring. If in doubt replace it. If you dont it will suck raw unmetered fuel and be an incredibly rich mixture. Nothing you do will get it to run properly.

Its ten minutes work.

You can get the green Viton O rings and they last a lot longer with petrol than the normal black ones.

thanks guys,

will check the o ring.

i'll have to check my manuals around the place, the metro one may have the HIF stuff?

so on the awesome diagram Morris 1100 put up, where does '8' vent tube go to?

any suggestions on the fitting sequence? carb, plate, spacer, manifold?

The Austin Maestro Montego forum sells them in England but I am sure you could source them locally at a bearing place.
The size is BS 013.
The dimensions are 7/16" Inside Dia, 9/16" Outside Dia, 1/16 Cross Section.

It just vents to the air. You can stick a hose on it to direct any overflow away from the exhaust. They only overflow if the needle valve in the float bowl sticks open.

Welcome to the HIF44 Carb I'v been using 1 for more than 8 Years now without little trouble. I'', just adding 1 to my newish motor and getting it all sorted now.

First off its manifold - spacer - abutment plate - carby. You should fine the smaller of the spacer will help for fitment of the carb as per below. Also you will see how I have the connection of hoses

Additional to richen its clockwise and to lean out its anty and the adjuster is under the fuel line in and will need a short screw driver to adjust.

just to let you know their are other HIf44 carbs also here's my latest as I recieved it. its a little differant now. I'll update on Sunday
