The car was a Cooper. I don't know if it was a 997, 998 or there is a story that they could have even a been a 1098. ![]() It won class B which was for cars that sold between £901 and £1000 ($1800 and $2000) This class was made up from the Mini Coopers, Renault R8s, a Cortina 1500 and a Simca. The drivers were Charlie Smith and Bruce Maher. The car finished in 9th place outright. I have one photo of the car in a book... ![]() I have cropped and enlarged it... ![]() |

Just want to know what it won, what colour and model it is (cooper I think) and is it still around or are there any replicas on the scene You went to the muscle car masters, and now you want to build a replica? I have been thinking of the same thing for a while! This my choice. ![]() [img][/img] |

Four Minis in front of four R8s in Class B.... with four laps between the fastest Cooper and fastest R8. Bob Holden was third fastest R8, one lap further back. While the Holland/Stewart Cooper had the fastest lap, the Gates/Fleming R8 was quickest down Conrod (102 mph) - but an Imp managed 107!!! although ending up 12 laps down on the Cooper. Although overall places were not awarded until '67, the Smith/Maher Cooper was on the same lap but one place (9th vs 10th) ahead of the Buckle/Foley Citroen (which, of course, was in a different class - 3rd in Class D). The Daddo/Russell 850 was 20 laps behind Smith/Maher but 9 laps ahead of the only Holden Premier. I doubt the Cooper was a 1098. Cars were strictly showroom stock back then and winners were taken back to Bathurst and completely stripped to check for eligability. Bo Seton was disqualified from second place in Class C (and 2nd OA) for having tyres with a smaller section than specified - he was later re-instated. Cheers, Ian |

The outright winner was recognised from 1965 onwards.1071 S wrote: I doubt the Cooper was a 1098. Bill Tuckey the then editor of Wheels Magazine, Sports Car World magazine and in his various Bathurst books claimed that BMC built 300 1100cc Coopers to make them eligible for Bathurst. He has written this a few times over the years. I think he is mistaken but he was there and in the business. So until we get to the bottom of this I wouldn't like to set it in stone.
How hard would it have been for BMC to make a batch of 1100cc Coopers out of 998 Coopers? It is just a crank, pistons, paperwork and then sell the things. If VW could make a special model Beetle for the 500, if Ford could make the GT500 Cortina, Holden the S4, etc.... |
