Are these flat top 998 pistons able to be machined to suit a 1098 build, or is there insufficient crown to the piston?

I know GR pistons are flat top and he does ones to suit 1098, but am just looking at possible alternatives.

998 pistons (some) have been shortened in the past to fit 1098s.
I think you will find them a bit thin down to the top ring, after you take 3.75mm off them (1/2 the 7.5mm stroke difference).
Also remember they go down further, so you will have to shorten the skirts.

GR's 1098 ones have the right crown height, but beware they are a bit long- they foul on the dizzy driveshaft unless you thin it down in diameter, or shorten the piston skirts.
[edit] Not sure if this is still the case, but it was an issue last year. Ask Graham...

How ridiculous is the fact that the pistons he has had made foul the dizzy drive.
That's just madness.

I put one of his first batch of +100 flat tops in the 1100 - tearing my hair out trying to work out what was wrong but was a simple fix getting the dizzy drive turned down into a little dumbbell

This engine is going to be built by an SA A-series master, with years of Historic racing experience.

Details to follow.

And the best ones are a 998 block with a 850 thicktail crank and about 140thou off the top of the block , its almost the same recipe as the European Turbo 850's

What is this thicktail 850 crank you speak off?

Early 850 cranks were only 1-3/8" diameter. Around 1964? they increased it to 1.5" the same as 998 & 1098.

:D I can just imagine now all the people out in the shed with the old 850 motor,s that were going to the tip stripping them to measure the crank , just remember you need custom thrusts ( bearings )
