Hey all,

I'm in the process of respraying my engine bay. I've primed it, and now I'm looking at top coating.

I have a couple of spare killrust spray cans - will this do the trick? I've used killrust before and I always got a good shine from it. I believe it's not great for UV, but it's in the engine bay, so who cares.

But over primer (not killrust primer) it'll lost it's rust killing, but will it work fine as a top coat (i.e. will it last).

Or should I bite the bullet and just buy some acrylic paint?

I was under the impression kill rust was an epoxy paint?
If it is enamel, enamel wont stick well to acrylic, so probably not a good choice.

If it is the epoxy stuff no reason it shouldn't work and be very durable.

Well, the can says "Epoxy gloss enamel," so I suppose it's an epoxy. The primer also says that it's suitable for acrylic and enamel paint.

So what's the difference between an 'epoxy enamel' and an enamel?

I prepped my engine bay with the Killrust etch primer then got a paint shop I found that filled pressure pack cans on site (not many about) with the right colour code in auto enamel.

Difference between epoxy and enamel is epoxy is tougher, will cover just about anything un-primed and is fairly soft so will resist chips but faint marks will show up easily. I.E. perfect for sub frames engine bays and aything that needs to be durable before pretty.

Enamel of course dries very hard, chips fairly easily but doesnt scratch and can be polished to a high gloss, I.E. for outside of cars.

Enamel will cover acrylic, but acrylic wont cover enamel.
Of course this is a simplified explanation.

For your situation I would say the kill rust sounds like a good choice, I havent used that brand myself but if its like other epoxys Ive used it ill work well.
