Post subject:  UPDATE - One Lap of Australia

Been remiss...but with lousy internet access since Karumba.

In Kununurra, Western Australia after plus 10,000 kms. Heading for Derby/Broome over next 2 days.

Route to date - Brisbane, Caloundra, Bundaberg, Gladstone, Emerald, Barcaldine, Longreach, Winton, Hughenden, Charters Towers, Townsville, Cairns, Cape Tribulation/Great Barrier Reef, Mt. Surprise, Croydon, Normanton, Karumba, Cloncurry, Mt. Isa, Barkly Homestead, Alice Springs, Yulara and back to Tenant Creek/Three Ways, Mataranka, Jabiru, Darwin and back to Katherine then on to Kununurra.

Mini Van has been going very well. Little 1098 just keeps pulling us along. No oil leaks, very little oil consumed (1/2 pint over last 5,000 kms.

Suspension has been good after a minor tweak in Cairns (thanks Steve B.) With extra rad there have been no over-heating issues.

Steady as she goes!!

Cheers,

Rick/Hunter2

Glad you've got extra cooling sorted.
It''s 40C in the shade up here at the moment, and a damn sight hotter than that out in the sun. Nearly rained yesterday though - it would have been the first rain since the 4th of April.

Hi All.

John K here.

Currently in Broome WA, over 10,000 kms down and all going well.

Internet connections have been very poor but I have managed to upload a lot of photos to my Facebook account.

Was going to do a blog but it is impossible with the quality of Connection available on the road - Sorry.

Cars are running well - 2XOil changes already - only drama so far has been a blown tyre and lost fuel cap on my car.

Rest day here tomorrow so after the sight seeing is over will try to catch up with emails etc.

Shall try to keep things more up to date - as before my facebook account has heaps of photos.

Hope to get Rick online later today.

Regards to All.
John Kornbrekke

Yes, trip has been going well for the Minis (excluding the blown tire).

ROO the '73 Window Van owes much to the preparation Andrew Wright did prior before the handover March 2010. i spent some $700 on parts which Andrew installed...in addition to some he purchased and installed.

Basically, with new rad, water pump, belt, hoses, clutch, clutch release bearing, clutch slave, drop gear bearings, crank seals, timining chain, motor mounts, wheel bearings, serviced CVs and rack with new boots, new output seals, QH joints...Andrew did a bang up job! This Mini does NOT leak oil. Mad Matt did a test drive.

I had Tony B. service the alternator and starter, install relays for the headlights and put an electronic pack in the dizzy. 6 new Falkens were purchased from and installed by Raynor in Nambour. Brett N. in Melbourne donated a 5th 12" mag wheel that holds one spare.

The test drive to Sydney flattened the old Dunlop doughnuts up front so better used ones, new adjustable cones, new tie-rod bushings and Koni sport adj. shocks were added in Paramatta with the active enthusiasm of Graham & Matt Russell. After the tweak of the left front, the suspension has been good.

On the road the little 1098 is happy with me taking the load up to highway speed and seems comfortable at 100-105 km/h. Very little oil consumption - only 1/2 pint over the 5,000+ kms. up to the last change. With steady travel the oil has stayed clean for the extended periods.

All I did to the Mini apart from discussing things with Andrew was install an extra rad behind the clubby grill and wire in the Garmin 9for the cities...). The test drive also revealed a shot muffler so a new one was installed with new mounts and some "tuning" of the downpipe with Ken N. at mini Automotive. some minor spares were acquired there as well.

Really it was left to me to get the little box about the two islands without breaking anything. So far...so good.

The four of us only total strangers weeks ago are getting along very well too. Lynne has a natural navigator's inclination..and a good photo eye!

Next it's down the Indian Ocean coast to Perth/freemantle before heading east to cath the ferry to Tasmanian to attend the Minifest in Hobart.

Weather cooler now on the coast so things should be more enjoyable!
