Morris 850 August / Sept 64 I wouldn't use oven cleaner, they often contain Caustic Soda (NaOH) which will dissolve the aluminium plate. Better to gently scrape and 'ping' the paint off so as to retain the black on the chassis plate. ![]() |

Depending on the oven cleaner it may destroy the id plate in 10 minutes or it might just take the paint off. There are different types of oven cleaners. |

You could try thinners or paint stripper to remove the paint and then polish with alloy polish or brasso or similar I wouldn't use oven cleaner as it's caustic |

I would be inclined to follow Grahams suggestion of carefully picking the paint off. The black background can come away pretty easily if your not careful. Or just experiment on a small corner |

Is it paint or grease stuff? I find it hard to tell from the photo. Would warm or cold water make a difference at all? Harden/soften something? I'm no expert, just a thought. I'd certainly follow the suggestion of trying a small corner first, the plates can't be replaced exactly as they came from the factory, so please be careful! |

try some "Prepsol" or "wax and grease remover" if its just cheap paint,. it might pull it off and and won't damage the plate. Thats what i'd do ![]() |
