i have a set and what to know what they looklike fitted... Also want to confirm the headlight/glass orientation, i know the fit with the star pointing up so to speak but how does the glass go as these seem to have come loose! if you know the P700 lamps the glass has a clearer band section in it does it go horisontal or vertical?!? thanks |

P700 headlight units are generally regarded as being more useless than regular units. I know they look cool but, if you use your car at night, you might be disappointed. Regards Al |

Same , I,ve followed Mick from Geelong going home , I,ve got halogens but his were much brighter . |

I'm pretty sure it's to do with the 'clear' section in the glass, it allows the beam to be 'pointed' straighter. At work we have 2 landcruisers, both have 90/130 globes in them but one has those crap looking, clear lensed lights with the wavey reflector and it powers past the std headlight. |

The P700 Lucas Tripod lights were fitted to cars in the 50's and 60's. The clear band is horizontal and ties in with the tripod which concentrates the beam. They were designed for British Pre Focus globes. Hotter modern globes sometimes blacken the inside of the tripod. They are reproductions and the general view is that they do not have a good beam. Also the reflectors on the old lights tend to separate and there is a loss of power from the light. Sometimes people would buy the 700 series and repair the Tripods by using the 700 reflectors. I have a couple of old Tripods that need this repair. There were also a PL700 and PF700 series of these lights, they are tripods with a larger badge inside the light. These lights had globes of about 40/50w and were the BPF or British Prefocus type. The Minis seem to have had the cheaper Lucas with globes at first and then as more sealed beam came available, alot of these were fitted. Newer, higher power globes are going to creat a problem for the reflectors. So if you want an English look, go for the cheaper English Lucas 700 lens with globe for earlier Minis, Australian look, go for Australian marked Lucas lens with BPF buls or sealed beam or modern for a better light. |

Thanks for the detailed information Adios. No problems so far with the P700s. I believe mine are genuine, not reproduction, but the repro's are definitely around. You can look at the construction and lens pattern to spot the new ones. Practically, the light thrown in fine, there is a cat's eye effect cast by the vertical arm of the tripod, its attractive, but not intrusive imho. I was driving the car twice weekly this year to the Mornington Peninsula at night both ways, so probably have 70 or 80 hours so far on the lights low and high. I have 55/60 halogens installed. They're pretty speccy lights, especially at night but if its period and 10/10ths performance you are after, I wonder if you can get Cibies? |

I had Cibies in my Fiat 124 Sport. They look similar size to common 7" Lucas lights but being metric, it's all different- won't fit Mini lamp buckets.. |
