| Post subject: | Bonnet Safety Catch Question |
I have a Mini Clubman, the Bonnet safety Catch is in the Middle. I keep hitting my head on it when I am working under the Bonnet. Is this Part Really Necessary??? Surely I could take it off and run without it??? What do you all think???

Isn't it a legal requirement that there is a secondary catch incase the main lock fails? If you do remove it (Which I don't really recmmend), then I'd fit a racing style caribina / wire loop as a security measure. |

No never... It's a legal requirement, and there for a reason. If you have a latch failure at freeway speeds (more common than you would think) the hood will open and wrap around the windscreen... Do I need to say how dangerouse that is? |

While I too have hit my head on this before I would never think about removing it. The safety aspect for myself and other road users is just too important.

Funnily enough I was talking to a Clubbie owner a couple of weeks ago and I pointed out that his bonnet catch was missing, he said that he kept hitting his head on it so he pulled it off, must be something about Clubbie owners... You would think that after hitting your head a few times and you would learn when to duck.  (I suppose he learned to duck when the bonnet hit the windscreen!)

Maybe somone should get clever and relocate the hook to the slam panel.

The number of times over the years that I have had the bonnet jump off the first catch onto the second catch. It was sometimes from hitting a bird or a bump on a long trip but it has happened quite a few times. The main catch can walk itself open from vibrations as you drive, when you are on a long trip try pushing the bonnet when you pull up for petrol and listen to the bonnet catch click fully closed.
Lucky that they all come with a secondary catch to save you.

You could install a CAMS 'secondary' bonnet catch... which would actually become a tertiary bonnect catch... and remove the hook from the middle of the bonnet. |

So you remove the automatic safety hook and add one that relies on human intelligence to operate? Is that a wise thing? |

I have had the bonnet catch slip off more than once, leaving the 'spearhead' to save the day. Don't remove it unless you have another backup catch. |
