I am fitting a mechanical temp sensor in the thermostat housing to my minimatic. Bought the new gauge/sensor, bout the new thermostat housing but not sure whats supposed to go where. The brass fitting that is separate in the second pic, is that supposed to go into the housing first, followed by the probe, or is the brass fitting just something to protect the probe in transit and does the probe just go straight into the thermostat housing? they both seem to screw in the housing, just not sure what goes where....

I'm assuming the brass fitting in housing is open on the inside? If so the adaptor will screw in first then the sensor taking care not to twist or bend the capilary tube. Whith out the adaptor the coolant would leak out between nut and tube

Peter B sounds right. I bought a new guage for mine, and the sensor had no "lip" to bottom out on. Went back to shop and they said "Oh, yea" you need the adaptor too.


If you try the sensor into the adaptor, you will see how it works.

So, adaptor goes on first, then sensor bolts into adaptor (use two open enders to nip it up. I also put a bit of plumbers tape on the threads to make sure.

I don't like using plumbers teflon tape on engines, I prefer a couple of drops of Loctite 242 or 262. No leaks and still comes apart OK.

Remember that it will only work when the thermostat opens if it is on top of the thermostat. and make sure it does not foul the thermostat from operating properly.

cant you put it in head where the original one is/was?

Thanks for the advice guys, will have a crack at it tomorrow. The old one from factory snapped off in the head and no one has managed to extract it. I did ask my mini mechanic to see if they can get it out and they advised me to use this thermostat housing option instead.

Depends on the car- 850 and Mini Deluxe had no threaded boss in the head to take it, that's why these threaded thermo housings were invented.

niceboy, all you need to get the old one out is a 9/16" dia drill and a 5/8 UNF tap. They are same thread as the bypass fitting and I have removed zillions of those this way.
