Post subject:	Speedo Repairs
So, I was wondering why the odometer wasn't working when I bought the car. Cable broken?(didn't drive the car) Missing parts........????????????? [/img] After searching & reading several topics on speedo's, Doc & morris 1100 said all Aussie motors had the same gearbox pinion drives & the speedos were changed to suit the different diff ratios. Does anyone have a list of the different TPM/TPH that were available here on Aus? My question is, as i don't have any other clubman 2 or 3 gauge dash to compare with, can i simple find a dash with the correct TPM/TPK and swap over the missing bits? or I'ld be guessing it would be easier to pull out mine and swap in a working one? My other challange is that I'm most likely going to swap from my current 3.44 diff to a 2.9 & I'm running 12" rims! Cheers Shane

This is a good site to start with http://www.guess-works.com/Tech/ You will need the pinion and speedo drive from the correct model (check out the link above it will calculate the one you need) the 2.9 diff came out of a 12 inch wheel car, so it will mostly be pay the money and get the right bits which are exspensive by the way. I need to sort out mine and are going to draw the cogs up in cad and get them plastic printed on a 3d printer. Its on the last thing to do list. Mine is running 3.1 diff on 10 inch wheels witha 1275GT speedo which is a little harder to sort. I have a TPI calculator some whare if you find the Guesswork link dosn't sort you out Kiwiinwgtn

I thought the bit made made the speedo work depending on what diff, was down in the gearbox/diff somewhere??

All Oz cars had the same speedo drive pinion and gear in the main gearbox- different speedo heads were used for the different diff ratios. eg Cooper S (3.44 diff and 10" wheels) speedo head is 1280 turn per mile. I have had 2 bigwheel Moke 140KMH speedos- one is 800turns/km and the other 860. Remember Oz production ceased in 1978- most of this plethora of strange drive gear combinations in the gearbox happened in UK after that (ie the Rover era).

I may have labelled the tread wrong, as the speedo actually works when spun, ie it give a kph reading, however the odometer fails to turn for the obvious of missing gears. Doc as you can see on the 3rd photo down it's a 780 TPK/TPM, which is why I included that photo. Do you know if the drive gears for the odometer are common across the Aus speedos? Kiwiinwgtn, yeah I've been checking out Guessworks alot recently due to a couple of gearbox rebuilds in the very near future and have sus'd their Tech info, but it doesn't cover the Aus stuff unfortunately. I think I'm still going to have to change the gearbox worm & pinion drive gears to match the 2.9 diff, I'ld like the speedo to be half acurate, ha ha ha, if that's possible. I'm too used to driving to a tacho not a speedo in a mini! Cheers Shane

Yep it is 780 turns/km, = 1263 turns/mile. = near enough for a 3.44 diff (Cooper S was 1280). All the odometers work in a similar fashion (ratchet and pawl) the differences are in the worm gear (you can see) and the driven gear + pawl it drives (I can't see). I would pack it off to a speedo place for repair. [edit] If you can find a late Oz Clubby 998 speedo (they used 3.44 diff mostly) rob these bits from it..

Thanks for that Doc, I'll keep an eye out for 1 in the For Sale section! I thought the made in UK was a little odd for an Aus speedo. Also mine has the quick clip style speedo cable connection while yours is a threaded one. That's what you get when you buy someone elses project, a lot of unknowns. Cheers Shane

All Oz fitted speedos were made in UK up until around 1968-69, when Mini K and Mk2 S etc got Oz ones. My 2 Moke 140KMH speedos are both made in UK.
