Post subject:  How much is too much

Quick question i have two minis ones a work car has a fair bit of rust

When is there too much rust to bother getting removed and just buy a better shell
I know anything can be done but i would have to pay someone to do the work and theres rust bubbles comming up on a few different areas
In the gutters on the roof, the seams down the side, doors and the paint is starting to bubble in other places it only a clubman s so would i be better off buying a better mini to start with

I want it as a weekend car and a car that one day i can do some track stuff in

cheers

For the track, depends on whether it is structural....so sills would be really good place to check...otherwise if it is cosmetic....well that can be treated and protected.

yeah structually it is all good the underside and sills are great no rust due to being painted in some black thick stuff by the looks
its mainly cosmetic but lots of time/labour needed to get it perfect i feel the roof will need a new skin
i quess its a tough question with out seeing the car i just feel unless its a copper of a LS or something probably not worth the 3 grand labour bill just after thoughts experiences

The roof on a Mini is a structural componenet...it ties all the pieces of the mechano set together...are there actual holes in the roof??

marc i'd take a screwdriver to that black thick stuff
there might be rust under it
as i found out in my mini

i dug it all up, primed and painted over

what i am thinking of doing is taking the car off the road stripping it and taking it to a pro but what have you guys found the price of rust removal to be
it seems like something that would take a while to do properly

if it's just fairly small bubbles, then there's a good chance it's only light rust underneath - the only way to tell is to take the paint off - use a screwdriver again, just pick away at it, you'll probably find that it's just heavy surface rust under there. Holes in the roof, I'd go with another shell, holes in the seams, I'd fix them

Sills rust from the inside out, so even if there isn't external evidence, they may be rusty inside, and so may any other shell you buy - could be 'better the devil you know'

Marc, getting a pro to fix it up will cost you a bucket load of dollars.

I have a very nice straight Deluxe, have a look in the for sale section. Probably around page 5 or 6 by now.

Had enough of the bitching, off topics and Pings on MiniMania and seen the light and come here hey Marc?
