Hang the expense , get a an Optima Red Top , just make sure you get one with the terminals in the right place , it can even be mounted on its side as there is no acid , never, ever run flat , if your alternator dies and your 400km,s from assistance and your in roo country with spotlights , no problem keep on trucking , as I said hang the expense , best battery you will ever buy BUT before you buy one check the date of manufacture first , I bought mine online and it was three months old , at Autobarn they had one that was 18 months old http://www.optimabatteries.com.au/Produ ... edTop.aspx . |

Yep Optima are great batteries.... , , , ..but I've always used the smallest, cheapest one I could find, and on my stock or mildly modified engines - no problem. If you're planning a big high-CR engine, spotties, ICE, etc then go for a bigger one. Otherwise a cheapy or good 2nd hand from a bigger car will do the job

[for normal lead acid batteries] I find the bigger they are the longer they will last. Mine is an Exide 550CCA as used in petrol landcruiser etc. It's been in there nearly 5 years and still works fine.

Lead acid Batteries.are fine when used correctly. One of the most common Corrosion causing problems is people filling or topping up batteries up too high. Always make sure that when you top up a battery the actual bottom tip of the caps do not reach or submerge in the acid level. These caps have a breather hole in them. When a battery is charging as for when the car is being driven the battery acid produce gasses and they need to escape. If the cap is submerged in acid it can not breath and therefore it will squirt acid out of the breather holes with the escaping fumes. Always make sure that the plug does not reach the water/Acid level. Another thing is make sure that a battery is always secured with a proper hold down clamp. This will prevent the battery moving around in the battery box and straining the terminal posts by means of the positive and negative cables tugging at them. This caused the battery posts to separate from the case itself and creating another gap for fumes and acid to escape. Best battery size for a Mini is NS50PL or equivalent. |

My Optima Red Top lasted 11 months then died and wasn't able to be recharged. They swapped it for a Yellow Top under warranty and so far so good. They are quite heavy though - the Yellow Top was much more weighty than the 480CCA lead acid I had before. |
