| Post subject: | Head Studs / Bolts??? |
Hi guys, just a quick one. Has anyone ever seen bolts used instead of studs & nuts for the head?? I'm about to pull a 1100S / 1275 motor down for a freshen up of unknown age & quality, & noticed it's got bolts holding the head down not studs. I know the head has been off in the past as it's had a port job & hardened valve seats! Cheers Shane |

Some of the Oz built 1098 and 1275 (1100S) motors had head bolts. They are all fatigued now, they break in the block when torquing up, toss away and fit studs and nuts. ARPs are nice (expensive though) but even s/h 998 clubby studs + nuts are way better then these bolts.

Whats the most common thing to happen when a head stud fails? I had one go the other day, its cracked right at the shank on the UNF end.

Good quality head studs don't usually fail but when studs do it's usually as you say. At least you can unscrew it easily once the head is off.. unlike a bolt that always breaks level with the block. Some current replacement (from wherever) studs are not as good quality as original fitment ones.. the best of which were the Cooper S (dimple hole in end) and 998 Clubby (pointy top end). |

I still have a set of Cooper S studs (dimple hole) however this head has been drilled for 11 studs and I think I only 10 Cooper S one's! |

Add a s/h Clubby 998 one, or even an old 850/998 stud. |

If your unsure of the life of the Bolts or Studs replace them. Myself I converted to studs and never looked back. Clean Thread, clean the top of the block of the thread, and blow out the bore (no oil, swath or water) where the bolt or stud goes |
