Hi all,

I'm working on attaching the diff to the gearbox. Now standard procedure is to attach one side with it's gasket, then attach the other side without, and measure the gap between the side and the main housing, and using this measurement, one can tell how many shims are required.

The problem I have is that there is no gap, even when I don't use gaskets and use all 4 of my shims (a total shim width of about 25 thou).

Is this normal? If it is I'm looking at using quite a few shims here.

Yes it sounds about normal to me.
You need to get more shims mate.
Gaskets supplied now are over 3x thicker than the originals were.
Both of my boxes have no flange gaskets, just Loctite 315 flange sealant and they don't leak.
If using gaskets (when rebuilding other peoples boxes) I put a .010" shim on the RH side to start with, then add the rest required to the LH side.

The reliance on the compressed thickness of a gasket has always bugged me. Bad design. Same with idler etc. Goo makes far more sense.

Alright, I'll pick up a few shims then. I was considering using a gasket maker, but I'm not sure, after seeing all the tiny pieces of chewed-up silicone stuck in my gearbox bearings. Whoever assembled the box before me used too much, but it's pretty difficult to stop it from oozing out altogether.

It just seemed strange that even without the gaskets, 0.025" was still not enough. Anyway, thanks guys.
