Its a pretty hard thing to do these days. Once upon a time in NSW you could pay a fee to the NSW RTA and the would do a print out of the registration history but because of privacy laws and the fact that a few people abused the system, those days are over.

Police also have access to the registration details but each time they access personal details they have to record details of why they accessed the records and "for a friend" is not an acceptable reason. They are very much accountable for violating privacy laws.

I am lead to believe insurance companies have a similar access but also with the same restrcitions and accountability.

Hi Norm74

I just went through the same thing with my 70 Mk2 recently if the car was registered in Vic you can fill out a FOI form available on Vic roads website cost is $20 my information took around 4 weeks to receive they should have all the Vic history not sure how to go about it in other States. The Vin (chassis No) are the most important numbers engine numbers don't seen to of been included on the records in the early days. Good Luck with it

The AOMC holds all of the old Vic records up to 1984 and you can pay for them to search by the vehicle reg or engine number. The records aren't computerised - it is just many, many filing cabinets full of paper which is why they charge a fee to search them.
