As most people would say, and probably the best advice you can get is:

Chat to GR about which grind you need for your engine and it's uses.

Probably after an RE13 or RE83

It all depends what you mean by 'performance.' If you put in a race cam, you will certainly get performance, but only above 4000rpm.

As adamstuart says, talk to a cam grinder, but make sure you know what you're after. If this is for road use, you'll want some low-down torque and power around the 4000rpm mark. If this is for racing, you can forget everything below 4000rpm, and just go for high revving power.

Grind numbers are so 60s, Most cam places will give you a form to fill out with things like extractors, port jobs, carb and whether you want road, fast road, race spec etc.

And as its all done via CNC its the same price as your average grind anyway.
No two engines are the same, why should cams be.

Check out the latest Mini magazine. August 2011, issue 188
There is a compare between a GR RE13OT cam and a Piper BP255 cam in a 998 and 1098 engines
Very interesting read
The RE cam produced more power and torque, as we have come to expect. :)

The RE130T cam is basically an RE13 ground by Piper cams (under licence) in UK, and sold by Keith Calver.
He sells it as either a bare cam or cam kit which includes lifters, valve springs and cam lube.
See http://www.calverst.com/shop_open.htm

It all depends on whats happening with the rest of the engine, what cylinder head, etc . . . prior to deciding what cam to go with.

Super - Mini - Have you ever tried any of these cams????

Drmini - Nice to see you push GR's local products!

If you are doing some head work and so on, Go a RE13T, Get onto Slo-998 (Ausmini member here in Adelaide) he has one in his 998 mule, and get him to take you for a drive and see what you think! Its a fantasic little 998 that hauls some ass!

Rob.

Wobbles, I only push cams that I've used and liked. Note these all were in engines 1058cc and bigger.
Over the years I've used Waggott's 18/58 and 23/60, Bert Jones 35/70, BMC's works cams (731 and 544), Camtech VP3, Wade 104, and Graham Russell's RE13 and RE282.

To me, the last 2 stand out from the rest for performance. RE13 gives good HP in anything. It even works fine in my 1412 stroker (with Corolla rockers).
The RE282 is Graham's sprint cam for 1275 and up, it loses some low and mid torque compared to the RE13. Its top end is fun though! (~10 more HP). I don't think this 282 grind is currently available, but I'm sure GR still has something similar.

Hey well, while we're supporting the local guys, don't forget:

-Wade Cams,

-Tighe Cams,

-Camtech (though to be honest I wasn't pleased with their customer service, so much so that I didn't bother going through with the purchase... just as well from what I've heard too..)

-Waggot

-Clive

To name just a couple of places that do mini cams.... And like BALLISTIC said, it depends on what work has been done on the motor (if any :?: ) .... might come as a shock, but its not a case of "One size fits all".

Mini_mel :) are you able to give the crowd some info on your motor? you've told us that its a 998.... has it had any head work done? Do you know what compression ratio its running? What carby(ies) does it have? Have you got a std manifold or extractors? If you can put up a little bit more info, no doubt some of the folk here can suggest something that is suitible for your needs :)

I have both GR cams GR83 & 13 and they are both in a 998 or 1098.
For a Good allround Road cam in a 998/1098 the GR83 is a Brilliant cam.
I'v used a 731 cam but its so 60 and just limp now adays.
Its not just the Cam but also the head to think about

Yes , the Wade 121 is a really good small bore cam, the Wade 240 is a great cam for a 1275

The small bore cam I really want to try is this one

Speco Thomas 357

Valve Overlap- 71
Cam Lift- 0.280 Valve Lift- 0.356
Inlet Open- 33 Inlet Close- 72
Exhaust Open- 67 Exhaust Close- 38
Inlet Period- 285 Exhaust Period- 285
Valve Clearance- 0.12
