Post subject:  The Book Says....
I hung my drive shaft vertically and hit it with a hammer and it didn't seperate. So I says to myself more force is needed and I put it in the vice vertically and hit with a hammer, NBG, didn't move at all. I read the book in case I didn't remember what I was doing (it has been 25 years) and the book says that I don't have to hit it real hard at all. I am using a lump hammer and I know how to use it, so what gives? BTW I removed all the ball joints on two minis today and they are not hard to do at all. two hammers and one hit each and they fall apart.

All i do to pop the cv joint off is to wrap a rag around the cv. Hold it at either end and hit the side of the CV next to wear the drive shaft goes in against edge of a brick wall, usually pops off the first time, if not the second time. Is the shaft moving in the cv freely? If not maybe a bit of wd40 or the like. It may have surface rusted together. Dunno, just throwing ideas.

I will try that. It is moving ok a far as the square ring will allow it.

I use a lump hammer, hold axle vertical, whack CV downwards. If no work, turn 180* and repeat medicine. Watch yer feet....... ouch!! :lol:

Do as Kev says, it will come off. What you're up against is the wire circlip on the end of the axle has spread and is not compressing to allow the CV to come off, assuming that the CV hasn't rusted itself onto the shaft. Most likely will break that circlip when you get it off and end up with bits inside the CV. If you are going to reuse the CV make sure you clean it well and replace the circlip.

I'll try a bit more violence tomorrow.I,ve never heard of one this tight. No rust as this was a daily driver and all the boots were in good condition.

Ok so I got into it again this morning and it was not moving at all, so I moved to plan B. The whole reason I am doing this is to swap discs and drums over and retain the pot joints. So I thought if I get the diisc/drive flange assembly off the shaft assembly it would be easier to handle. I couldn't budge the nut. More accurately I couldn't hold it tight enough in the vice by the shaft to undo the nut. By this time I am getting a bit aggro and best to walk away and think about it. I rounded up a 3/4 drive socket and bar with 4 feet of pipe and decided to have another go. I put the contessa wheel nuts on the studs and tightened them up real tight to strengthen the studs then I put it in the vise studs down and tightened up the vise on the studs and this left the drive flange nut pointing at the floor. Two of us then had to swing off the pipe and socket bar and it finally gave and I didn't bend the studs at all, bargain I say. i then held the shaft long ways in the vise with about 10mm between the inner face of the CV cage and the end of the vise jaws and getting two cold chisels to act as wedges drove them between the vise face and the CV using them as wedges. It finally gave way as the ring disintegrated and I had won. When I pulled the others apart all the rings were distorted so I reckon they should only be used once. Use them more than once and you might have a heap of trouble getting them apart.
