Ok, So after sorting the brakes, I have a new prob! I noticed when parking, slow slow speed, turn the wheel then suddenly it "jolts" and there is a little thud and the wheel kind of slips a bit, turn back the other way, same thing (like a tooth slips or a ball joint or something... Ok, ill sort it on the weekend. Then today, I notice my steering wheel is about 40deg clockwise! So, I drive a bit, turn and the wheel slips that 40deg and then the wheels turn, turn the other way, wheel slips around 40deg and then wheels catch up... so there is play or something somewhere. Where do I check? If I pull out the steering column and check the column to rack spline What else? Could it be the bolt at the bottom of the steering column? I am not 100% sure on how the steering column, etc bolt up and move so until I get to it thought I would ask people for opinion. Yes, I will NOT be driving it due to this and will sort it this weekend. Pete |

The two easiest things to fix and check are: 1. is the steering wheel nut tight, and 2. Is there a small bolt in the bottom of the column on the clamp to the spline? If those are good, I'd be pulling the rack out. |

check the U bolts under the carpet first - if they're loose the rack can slide from side to side pristic wrote: Where do I check?

I am not 100% sure on how the steering column, etc bolt up and move so until I get to it thought I would ask people for opinion. if it's not the rack moving, then yeah, it'll be the spline - take the pinchbolt out completely before trying to pull the column off when putting it back on, slacken off the U bolt nuts, do up the pinchbolt, then do up the U bolt nuts all done from inside the car |

So wait, you mean check the little bolt I can see at the bottom of the column right... ie/ if its tight or not. Wait this will work better. 1. Check the little bolt at bottom of column if tight... 2. Check steering wheel bolt (the big mutha) 3. Check U bolts holding on the rack (inside the car, etc) for rack movement 4. Check the spline if all above ok Anything else? Yeah - I know. Its one thing after the other... to be honest, I have been putting her through hell lately and she holds up to the task. So I am quite happy... also, on the brakes, I have had brake issues since day 1 when I went to Cooper S disk brakes... It felt more solid with drums to tell the truth but the brake fade was bad. I just need 30 hours in a day and 8 days in a week then I would have enough time to sort it all the way I really want. Cheers, Peter |

When checking the pinch bolt, make sure the slot still has a gap. If not pull it out and run a cutting disc into it. |

and make sure there are still splines left inside the colum could be all worn and stuffed... Beanie |

Check the splines where the rack and column meet if the little teeth are worn this will slip. I noticed it happened frequently if my old mini when swinging into a carparks as well. Changed the column . Sweet as. |

More fuel to the fire: If your column is lowered, make sure the rack has been aligned to match. |

Lowering the column without realigning the rack is the #1 cause of stuffed column splines, IMO. The pinion splines survive OK as they are hardened. |

So Doc - in your medical opinion - its the spline on the column? If it is, I have been thinking about a mod anyway - and replacing the column completely ... Will see how we go tomorrow. Pete |

Oh man, brings back memories. Pulling out of a Bowen Hills driveway in peak hour to drive home to Ipswich, steering wheel starts free wheeling So glad it happened then and not later. Trained it home, then got a good second hand column from Ken, trained it back a few days later and installed it. All Good.
