Gday guys.
Found a potential 850 mini as purchase option. The id plate is however not stamped by machine but more by hand. Its a 62 model so early one. Just found it odd.

Also plate located on passenger side of firewall rather that driver side as normal.

Any help appreciated.

All BMC plates were hand stamped up till around the end of 62.
Some plates were hand stamped after that, mainly MG's.

The very early 850 CKD cars has the ID plate mounted on the passenger side of the firewall next to the speedo hole. There will be 2 ID numbers one for the Australian BMC Car number and a longer ID number most likely for the CKD number. You will most likely find these stamped each side of the speedo hole on the firewall. You may even find some brass door hinges, different seats and their mounts. slots for drains in the front roof, different floor construction and quite a number of other early production features.

Mmm. Interesting. Unable to check for stamped numbets at the minute however can confirm it does have slots at front of roof channel and also only a five digit odometer. Doesnt have the 1/10th of a mile counter.

The car is white in colour. The colour code is platinum.
The vehicle had evidence of having been painted before. Can some highlight to me exactly what colour platinum is ment to be. Plate reads 1/platinum/3

Platinum is a very very pale blue. There was a Cooper 997 colour scheme of Shadow Blue/Platinum (roof).
An 850 without the 1/10 odometer is early indeed. My 850 is a 1960 CKD car assembled here in Oz probably late 60 early 61.

Thats interesting to know. The car is white. Inside and out. Id really like to find some more history on this car. Is desifering the car id plate of any advantage to achieving this or are they all a little too hit and miss to be of any real help?

the car id plate will give the details of what number mini it is, and as a result an approximate date.

Then people like willy and a lad called sports850 who was collating a list of 850's will be able to give you an approximate date of build.

Sort of related, are heritage certificates available on ckd minis? by using the other number on the car (i think i read from memory often the ckd minis had two numbers; an english and an aussie and one was usually covered over)

Well. Bought the little 850. Out in day light its certainly the original colour a very very light blue despite having been repainted many years ago. Pleased to find original engine number. Tweaked some stuck valves and she runs like a clock. Now to tweak brake and clutch and see if i can get this rocket driving again!
