There is no law against this (it is NOT a VIN plate)- people do it all the time.
As long as the plate number matches what's already stamped on the car, no problem.
(If course, if it's a rare Mini and `originality' is all important, well then yes we must leave it there to preserve the original pop rivets with their 50 years patina of corrosion...)

Where are all the Id spots on the mini. I'm a bit afraid that I might be missing a plate. I'd heard of the stamping in the radiator shroud?

On early cars up to March? 1969 there is a BMC car ID plate on the firewall and a stamped car number (same number) also on the firewall. The body number (approx 500 different) is stamped on the radiator shroud.
From ~December 1969 there is a compliance plate on the front RH suspension tower (later moved to the RH inner guard on Clubbies) and the car's ID number is stamped on the radiator shroud. The body number is stamped in the rain channel of the scuttle panel, above the wiper motor.

Cars built between ~March 69 and ~December 69 had neither plate fitted.

Confusing, ain't it.

Registration authorities these days seem to think the radiator shroud number is always the car's ID number, this is not the case for pre-69 cars.

I havent had a thorough look for my numbers, but I'm a little worried about reg time for my K as I dont see any plate.
My K is a 69.
Build date I can find as I have all the paperwork for it.

What number stamped where will I absolutely have to have for reg?
I cant imagine any numbers have been ground off on my car.
Its not like its a grey import.

Body number on a Mini K is on top of the radiator shroud.
If there are not 4 pop rivet holes in the front of the drivers side suspension tower, it never got a compliance plate. These only became law from January 1970.

The number on the shroud is all you need, as said the compliance plate is NOT a VIN plate, which were never fitted to Oz built Minis.

Coopar, my K is a 1970, so it's got the plate. However, I had to sand the paint off the radiator shroud in order to reveal the stamped number; they are apparently not really firmly done so are a bit feint. You should find the type code - YG2S1 - which defines it as a K, then the (probably, mine is) four-digit car number.

I haven't yet found the body number under the paint.

Getting my Mini K registered in Brisbane which was last registered NSW 20years ago. I had the old rego papers but fitted another motor so engine number was different.First I went to Suncorp & paid for 3rd party insurance then I went to a Mechanical workshop, car was checked over for roadworthy, when writing out the roadworthy mechanic was unable to read chassi number on radiator shroud, told me to go to transport department, they came out & had a look & sent an email to a police station to say it had to be restamped, I had to ring police staion to make a booking for them to check it. Booked in drove car to police station a Copper came out & agreed you could not read the number, went inside & filled a form out for application for a new number & authority to restamp car. The Copper then told me he would send that to the Transport Department & it would take a week to 10 days for the paperwork to come through. Two days later got phone call, paper work was all there, drove to cop shop, got paper work & a list of workshops that could restamp the car. Suprisingly there was no fee at the cop shop. Started ringing workshops to book in for restamping, prices ranged from $50 to $110. Naturally I booked in for $50 got car stamped then booked in to original roadworthy mechanic to have car rechecked. Got roadworthy then back to Transport Department, a women came out to check the restamping & said it wasnt deep enough & to go back to the bloke. I politly protested & she decided it would be alright so we went back inside finished off the paper work I paid my money & off I drove all nice & legal.

Rather than go through all that ^
if your car has many resprays & you cant make out the number on the shroud then strip it back to bare metal and give it a coat of light coloured etch primer, then a coat of cheap black spray paint. Hit it with a sanding block and the numbers will stand out like dogs balls.

You can always touch up the paint after it's all rego'd.

I went through most of that once for a motorbike, but the stupid thing is I didn't have to stamp the number on the frame. Because it was a historical machine they have an exemption, they were happy (after me telling them I didn't have to stamp it) to have it on the paperwork. What a waste
