Post subject:  Front Seat bracket Mountings cracked channel and stripped...

Hi all,

I have a problem with my 850, the front seat mounting channel that has the nutserts/rivnuts in it for the front seat mounting brackets is cracked around the nutset. the nutsert has started to tear the channel section around it, plus one of the nut serts is stripped.

What do you think would be the best repair for this?

There is one whole in the back of that channel around 20mm in dia but I cannot get into the channel to weld new nuts in with some plates on the front face of the channel for the repair and i do not want to remove the channel and drill the spot welds etc

Its only drivers side, passengers is ok,

thoughts????

Why not just cut out the drivers mounting bits and fab up a new one to weld in?

Seems like an easy enough task, and it will be covered by carpet anyway, right?

That way you can make sure the nuts are all well and truly captive, not hanging on by a 40 year old british thread

The way the seat bracket captive nuts are mounted on that very thin channel is a pathetically weak setup. The sheet steel flexes & fatigues with use.

I drill 12mm holes right thru the channel from front to back, where the captive nuts are.
Then I tap one end of a 12mm bar to 1/4" UNF and braze it in both front and back with oxy and nickel bronze. The bar is 3mm longer than the channel width.
Oxy does a neater, stronger job in this application. I used to weld spaceframe chassis racecars this way.

ps. I have some finished bars here, maybe 4- can make more if you want.

[edit] I did gafmo's van this way, as they were all cracked and busted.

Thanks Kevin, i think this is better than making a new section, dont want to F/up any more painted areas than i have to.
