ausmini :: View topic - Recommend a place to stroke a 1275LS crank?

Hi All,

I have a 1275LS crank that I am going to get stroked as finances permit. Can any one recommend a place in either Newcastle or Sydney. Also how many $$$$ do you think I will be looking at?

I already have the S rods available and will but some 73.0mm Hypertec pistons.

Recommend a place to stroke a 1275LS crank?...well I don't really like to talk about this sort of thing in public...but OK.....the webs are a little rough so I steer clear of them, the nose is too purposeful and there are some sharp edges there....so the journals....oh yes...the journals...thats the place to stroke a 1275 crank:oops:

How hard is it for you to get down to Sydney?? lots of possibilities there..

He charges around $240 to stroke it, with all journals ground. `Crack test' it (stand it on one end, ping the top crankweb with a spanner) before you ship it. Out of the last 5 of these he got, 3 were cracked already.. Should ring like a bell when you do this. If not, it's probably a dud..

I have heard that getting it hardened is where it can all go wrong.... Thanks for the info Jim

No it doesn't include tuftriding, or nitriding, which is more common now.. I investigated this a while back, and like 99% of Graham Russell's race motor customers, I'm now leaving mine as is.. it's 84.3mm stroke with std/std bearing sizes. (I saved a bit of $$ as the std mains were mint). Spiro grinds all GR's cranks, and does nice work. I've seen a stroker 12G1505 crank that had been `nitrided'- when it all went pear shaped on the track, it wore the pins just like a standard 1100S crank would. <edit> Quoted from www.matter.org.uk - "To get a hardening effect on nitriding the steel must contain strong nitride forming elements such as Al, Cr and / or V." Note that EN16 steel used in these cranks has no Al, or V, or Cr. It's a Manganese Moly steel- C 0.32-0.4%, Si 0.1-0.35%, Mn 1.3-1.7%, S 0.04% max, P 0.35% max, Mo 0.22-0.32% Anyhow why not ring Spiro and discuss it, or go see him...
