Yes...another Highbeam / headlight thread :)

I am totally stuck with this one, everything appears ok....but no highbeams when pushing the stalk forward or pulling it back.

The stalk is brand new, but I had the same problem on the previous worn out stalk.

Indicators, parkers, low beams work, and stalk horn works. The blue / white wire is a single piece with no faults, breaks or dodgy connections.

The wiring for the highbeams is as follows -
Thick blue / white from stalk all the way to the front of the car, this then splits with one going to each headlight.

The purple wire on the stalk for highbeam flash if you pull the stalk back is wired into the thick Blue / White back in the car.

My assumptions are -
If the low beams work, then the ground to both headlights is perfectly fine.
I should be able to put high beams on with the car on or off (As long as headlights are on.)

Have I wired it incorrectly ?

Am I missing something ridiculously obvious ?

I have stolen this picture, but these are the Purple and thick Blue / White I am referring to (Ignore the text boxes) -

If you had the same problem with the old stalk, did you perchance check to see if the lamps are working?

Or check with a multimeter to see if the switch is connecting fine or check with a test light to see where the power is

Does the High Beam in the Headlights actually work? One check you can do, under the bonnet, is find the Blue/White wire and short that straight to the B+ on the Solenoid.

I thought the problem was the old stalk, as it had the classic melted plastic and fried wires.

I am about to eat pizza and then head back out.

I will try the solenoid trick and let you know how that goes.

It's not one with anything on the floor, all on the stalk.

Low Beam works, but as soon as I push the stalk forward the lights go out.

The plan was to grab a multimeter today, but that didn't happen. I will try and get to DS again tomorrow.

So, headlights are OK.
Earth is OK.
Blue / White from the front of the car to the stalk is in one piece with no damage do it.

That leaves the blue cable running into the stalk.

Is there an unused wire on the switch?

I think you have the high beam hooked to the wrong wire.
The extra wire for the flasher is power into the switch and not power out of the switch.

OK, good. Now go to the connector in the car where the stalk plugs in. Disconnect it, then (on the car loom plug) short the Blue Wire to the Blue/White Wire (with the Headlight Switch ON). High beam should come on.

You're right, they did.

So blue has power in.

Blue / White has a good connection.

That leaves the stalk then ?

You're a legend.

Got me to take a REALLY close look at the contacts in the stalk. The high beam looked like it was touching, but obviously wasn't....a quick poke with a wooden skewer and highbeams were on :D

Going to do some bending and get it to touch properly, as it doesn't want to stay.

EDIT - By the way, this is a brand spanking new stalk.

I'd say so. Plug them back together and then try the same thing on the Stalk side of the plug. One of the connections might be dicky, even look closely at the crimps and the wire stripping (that it has been stripped).

If all OK, then on the stalk, they wires are again crimped and riveted in place. I've had some with crook connections between the rivet and the wire lug.
