Post subject:  1.5" SU's - Which needles do I need?
Hi Guys

Hoping some of you gurus out there can point me in the right direction.

I have a 1967 S, motor is not quite standard. I have never had the head off, but appears to have flat top pistons and a little bit of porting work. I also suspect a non standard cam, doesn't idle nicely under about 1200 rpm.

I have just reco'd some 1.5" SU's which currently have 0.090" (swing) ADX needles. I have these wound up as far as they will go, but it is still running lean up to about 3000 rpm.

Any ideas which needles I might need?

If you can fit fixed needles try some No 4,s , its the same needles as the Police Cooper S

cops used CP4's

#6's were good in my car with twin 1.5's - I think ex. Dr Mini's Barney uses #6's too

see here for a comparison of #6, your ADX and a couple of swingers that are roughly equivalent to #6

edit: it's easy to convert a swinger to fixed, and I reckon you could go back the other way with some araldite to glue the collar on

My motor is similar but I think my cam is standard Cooper S.

I tried a few and settled on No.6. fixed needle. Seems to run well but never have had it analyzed properly.

looking again, that ABD needle would be worth a try I reckon, I had CP4's, and they were too rich, even the #6's were rich at idle & cruise. ABD's would give you a bit of meat to sand off

So what do I need to do to convert the swinging needles to fixed?

to take a swinging needle and put it in a fixed dashpot piston, all you need to do is tap the collar thingy off it and linish the knurling so that it fits in the base of the piston

but if the carb has a swinging dashpot piston, I think you need to replace it with a fixed piston...

Yeah, I think I have the swinging piston. Will go through the carby box in the shed to see if I have the fixed ones. Makes sense that I need to replace the piston.

Simon, I think there is/was an adaptor you can get to fit a fixed needle in a swinging piston..

ps. don't forget to fit a new jet with your fixed needle- those swingers wear the jet out. :x

FX is leaner than a no 6, which in turn is leaner than a CP4.
