Post subject:  clunking from drivers side

no idea what it is or what is happening, but there is a major clunking noise coming from the drivers side. now the steering rack is old and needs replacement but im not 100% convinced its that. nothing seems to be loose or broken (that i can see) it happens during driving and taking off but once it hits 80km no noise what so ever :S

any ideas?

cheers southy

CV's possibly. Does it get worse when turning?

Engine steady, maybe  . Does it make the same noise if you lift your foot off the throttle and push it back down again ?
Is the noise constant whilst driving, or turning ?, or is i only there when you do certain things ? Could be a number of possible things .

Look at the basics
bearings
ball joints
bushes incl engine steady and moujnts
undo the ball joints and check the upper arm as bearing wear will do this as well.

It could be the steering rack-
If the rack bush is worn, the LH side can clunk.
If the 2 belleville (`wave') washers are broken the RH side can clunk, but if it's this there will also be slack in the steering.

I'm thinking rubber universals (that's if there's any cars left with them)

Suspension knuckle. Check plastic bowl is in place and that the knuckle isn't sitting out at an angle.

If you buy one of those supposedly `new improved!' :? racks and it sh!ts itself inside 12 months, take the bastard back to the supplier and complain!
They don't make `em like (or where) they used to.
