Post subject:  Rocker Cover Studs
Well there has been a lot of talk about adjusting rockers and such so I thought I would give it a go.... Well all went fine adjusted no worries. Putting the cover back on torque up to 4lbs/ft with the torque wrench and bang.

What was that..... *#$%@ rocker cover stud snapped. :oops: a little embarassing.

I think the torque wrench is playing up (well that is my excuse and I am sticking to it)

Just need some tips to put a new stud back into the head. Is there a torque setting for this..... :oops:

Umm OUCH..i would say u gotta take the other stud off, the get the cover off, get soime multi grips adn get that broken stud off without ruining the thred, then get new stud and put it back on..hope it sorta helps

SIMON!,
I'ts only supposed to be a bit more than finger tight. You sure wrench is ft/lbs? How much of the stud is above the rocker shaft pillar, enough to grab it with multigrips?
If not you will need to remove rocker gear.

Well I managed to get the remaining stud out... with a bit of force.

Have organised some more studs to be put in this afternoon after work.

Dino.. Yes I am sure that the torque wrench was set properly, Don't think it is working as it should though.

Is it really important that it is at 4lbs/ft??? Can it just be tight???

If there is any thread left at all, maybe you could use two thin nuts to form a locknut....you may have to take the rocker gear off to do this :?: :?:

no, not even tight - it's only meant to squash the cork gasket a teeny tiny bit - a turn or 2 with a spanner past finger tight is heaps..... you can't have set the torque wrench properly.....

The stud performs two duties, the first bit holds down the rocker pillar and this is important to get it sensibly tight. The second part holds the rocker cover and this can be judged "by eye" as under the washer is a rubber plug to stop oil coming out of the hole. .. and you don't want to squash your new rocker cover gasget .. do you?

Is the RC distorted now? If it is it will leak oil I would think. Must have been bloody tight to snap a stud and I can't imagine the RC surviving that without being bent.

OUCH!!! you only need to tighten the back four and the external (front five) 9 / 16 bolts to the torque setting. The stud nuts (1/2 inch) only need to be secure. How do I know? I learned the hard way just like you a few years ago (the book told me to do all 15 nuts up to 40 f/p)

Well the saga has come to an end... New stud in and purring like it has never purred before. :lol:
