Remove the big pipe from the oil filter to the block and top up the port in the block.

I never fill up the oil filter, you get a bit of air between the pump and the filter and you can't get rid of it.

I do that, then I wind the motor baclwards a turn or 2 and top it up again. Also I leave the banjo bolt 1/2 a turn loose, then crank (with plugs out) until oil comes out, and tighten it.

My Cooper S motor always needs priming if it hasn't been started for a month or two. I never bothered looking for the cause, I used to just turn the key watch the gauge, if the gauge didn't move I would prime it with an oil can.

I will look deeply when I rebuild it.

I had a major problem with an S motor many years ago, fresh rebuild all ready to start and do you think I could get oil pressure, tried everything.
If I disconnected the hose to the oil cooler I had oil flow but no pressure,
put a pressure gauge on it no pressure.
I ended up putting it on a trailer and took it to Link, they tried and got the same results as myself. It turned out to be that we had used another gearbox casing as my original one had a crack in it, Bryan pulled the motor and split the box from the motor and the only thing we could find was the surface of gearbox casing was not 100% true and we put the whole problem down to it sucking in air around the O ring. Bryan painstakenly rubbed the gearbox surface down and made sure it was dead flat popped it back together
and we had instant oil pressure.

I've found that some new pumps are made with excessive clearance between the gears and the housing.
If there are problems needing to prime the pump when the motor has sat for a while after being run, this is most likey the cause.
Pumps with this problem seem to always make good pressure, just have problems with bleed down and priming.
I now always check new pumps and often have to take a bit off the pump body to get the clearance correct.

You did remember the O ring between the engine and gearbox?

I also get oil pressure up while it's still on the engine stand, not much but enough to show me that it's doing what it's supposed to.

I take out the oil pressure switch and using a bit of 3/16" rubber vacume hose and oil can, pump as much as you can in. Works every time for me.

well i have pumped ( using gravity) about 4 liters of oil through the pipe from the block to the filter (filter end off)

got it to push some frothy oil out but not much

looks like its sucking air

is there a way to fix this in the car? or am i going to have to pull the motor out and separate it from the gearbox which i think iam going to have to do

If the motor has been standing for a zillion years like my `79 Moke was, the pickup strainer may be clogged with sludge...
No way out but to strip it if so.
