During a recent 1360 engine rebuild I acquired a 12G940 head with unleaded inserts and recut inlet seats.
However, it has a crack in #3 chamber, from the middle water plug hole (plug removed) to the exhaust seat.
I milled then removed the exhaust insert, and used a dyechek kit to to see how far the crack went.
Unhappily, it goes right past the exhaust seat insert recess and into the exhaust port below. I don't see how I can weld it that far, so it looks like it's a candidate for the scrap bin.
The reason we didn't find this crack before fitting inserts is, the dodgy PPO painted the head face and chambers silver before putting it up for sale.
Moral of this story- never buy a head with the face and chambers painted!
Apparently cracking here is not uncommon- GR had someone's head there the other day for reconditioning with this problem, but in both #2 and #3 exhaust ports.
NBG so he binned it.
