Hello.
I am looking at preparing the engine/gearbox/ancillaries for installation into the engine bay.
The short motor 1275 (1100s engine) has been machined/rebuilt and the rod Change gearbox overhauled.
I have heard the following and wanted some second opinions/advice on connecting the engine block to the gearbox.
Procedure
Step 1
Before the block & gearbox are mated together the 'Idler gear clearances' need to be set first. This is because it is too late to do afterwards.
Step 2
The clearance between the box housing and main studs needs to be checked.
Is this done after applying the silicone sealant to the gasket and placing the 'box housing' in position ?
Step 3
Place the half moon seal in position on the engine/block (the timing plate holds it in place between the plate and the front main bearing cap)
and use either a light smear of Loctite 515/518 or silicone sealant. (I have heard that Loctite is preferable as silicone sealant can squeeze out and block the lube holes in the diff side covers which would/ could lead to bushes overheating and wearing prematurely). On this point, the sealant problem would only occur if way too much sealant was used in the first place would it not ? The question is whether Loctite or silicone sealant (used appropriately) is preferable. Step 4
Either tip the engine upside down and place the gearbox on top of it or lower the block onto the gearbox.
Step 5
Continue with installing block to gearbox nuts/bolts,flywheel,clutch,etc

What is involved in setting the above clearances, what tolerances/'clearances' need to be set and what parts are required i.e shims, etc.

For gaskets (except cylinder head gaskets) is it preferable to use aviation grade gasket sealant or silicone sealant ?
If the above is not the correct order of doing things, I am missing any steps, or there are any useful tips/hints feel free to edit the text or provide comments.

Much appreciated.

My preference is to NEVER use Silicon as a gasket....use gasket goo or whatever only.

lower the gearbox onto the block ...a lot lighter & easier to handle for starters.

I also mark ALL bolts/nuts with a white paint marker when final torque is applied...just my safety habit.
